When to use the report button

.....and I'll add that a little judgement is appreciated. Someone posting a silly single-letter post is not really worth reporting.

It's also somewhat bad form to persistently PM members of the moderating team rather than reporting messages.

When the report function is used frequently by particular users to report 'non emergencies' the moderators get annoyed that the emergency hot line channel is used for small offences. We'd rather it was used for the big things.

We do frequent sweeps of the forum and clear out the trash posts and some, if not all of the small offences will get spotted.

Ah, that's helpful guidance actually. I thought from previous posts we were supposed to use the report button to highlight problems which Admin might not otherwise see, rather than it being for emergencies only. So if someone posts a link to a spam or virus-laden site, I tend to report it. I'm guessing from what you say, that I shouldn't.

Reporting spam is useful Siduhe, so please continue to do that, especially as the forum seems to fall foul of it on a very regular basis.

Gidget, what Moos and El Pibe says isn't wrong, and this is explained by Admin. What we don't really need is to be told every time someone posts more than one advertisement in the for sale section. These get noticed, and when necessary removed/the poster emailed.

So where repeated posts by the same forum member are personally offensive, defamatory and libellous, what action is taken when they are reported - apart from (hopefully) those posts being deleted?

So what are the criteria for banning somebody from the forum, if making persistently false and defamatory posts is not included?

I imagine the authorities would accept screenshots as proof of libellous statements (where the person being accused can prove the libel, of course), so it is not whether the forum would assist the authorities that concerns me.

What does concern me is that individuals seem to be able to make repeated inflammatory and defamatory statements whilst providing no back-up evidence whatsoever, and still continue to be able to post on here with impunity.

Other individuals are banned, in some cases repeatedly, yet their forum behaviour does not appear to be any worse than those who are not banned.

ETA: I am not talking about "spats" between posters, which are fairly frequent on the forum. I am talking about very serious and unfounded accusations being publicly made by one poster about another.

Sue, I assume you are talking about the exchanges between you and another user because they have flared up recently. To some the exchanges are amusing ("better that EastEnders"), to some that are like rubbernecking a car crash, to me they are a pain in the arse and I do not wish to get involved in personal spats between posters, which despite you saying otherwise is what they are.

You have asked me to consider banning the other user, which I have done and I have decided to take no action because it a personal indifference between the two of you. Don't get me wrong, the other user is aware that they have made comments that I don't want on the site and they have apologised.

I have no idea if accusations are true or false, I can only go on what I am told and use my judgement, based on my experience of the the forum and the individuals involved. I have lots of experiences with you Sue on which to base my judgements.

My advice, keep your issues off the forum.

I think anybody who read the posts in question and their context would be able to make their own assessment of the situation.

As would anybody who has "lots of experiences" with me.

Perhaps you'd care to share what these are.

Sue, you seem a very nice lady on the occasions I've met you, I mean that. However, when you get the bit between your teeth you're like a bulldog with a bone!

I haven't even seen these recent posts, but I can guess what it's about. It's uncomfortable reading for everyone else (in a sort of car crash way), and very unfair on admin, who is not paid to run this forum under a certain set of rules that we all have a say in. This forum is given to us all to use, but it's not fair to involve admin in your personal issues.

Just let it go, or take it all the way to court if you want to, but don't play it out on here, it's just embarrassing.

It was not me who dragged this all up again.

I was trying to let it lie and forget all about it due to the stress it was causing me, until the other person suddenly out of the blue made unfounded accusations about me, and now you seem to be doing the same, except you will not say what they are.

If somebody else starts things up again, you surely cannot expect me to just sit back and let these unfounded accusations stay on a public forum without responding to them.

I would have thought impartiality was a basic criterion for a forum administrator. You might want to look at Ellie78's posts on the Ask Admin thread on 17 November in reference to this same poster, which taken together with your recent comments about me would seem to suggest otherwise.

I was talking about dragging up all the issues I've ever had with you, your email problems , your signatures, your events, your personal spats, your issues with x and y etc etc.

Let it lie Sue. Final ever warning. I'm that close to banning you just to make my life soooo much easier.

    • Hmmm, millions of animals are killed each year to eat in this country.  10,000 animals (maybe many more) reared to be eaten by exotic pets, dissected by students, experimented on by cosmetic and medical companies.  Why is this any different? Unless you have a vegan lifestyle most of us aren't in a position to judge.  I've not eaten meat for years, try not to buy leather and other animal products as much as possible but don't read every label, and have to live with the fact that for every female chick bred to (unaturally) lay eggs for me to eat, there will be male that is likely top be slaughtered, ditto for the cow/milk machines - again unnatural. I wasn't aware that there was this sort of market, but there must be a demand for it and doubt if it is breaking any sort of law. Happy to be proved wrong on anything and everything.
    • I don't know how spoillable food can be used as evidence in whatever imaginary CSI scenario you are imagining.  And yes, three times. One purchase was me, others were my partner. We don't check in with each other before buying meat. Twice we wrote it off as incidental. But now at three times it seems like a trend.   So the shop will be hearing from me. Though they won't ever see me again that's for sure.  I'd be happy to field any other questions you may have Sue. Your opinion really matters to me.
    • If you thought they were off, would it not have been a good idea to have kept them rather than throwing them away, as evidence for Environmental Health or whoever? Or indeed the shop? And do you mean this is the third time you have bought chicken from the same shop which has been off? Have you told the shop? Why did you buy it again if you have twice previously had chicken from there which was off? Have I misunderstood?
    • I found this post after we just had to throw away £14 of chicken thighs from Dugard in HH, and probably for the 3rd time. They were roasted thoroughly within an hour of purchase. But they came out of the oven smelling very woofy.  We couldn't take a single bite, they were clearly off. Pizza for dinner it is then. Very disappointing.
