numbers
home-made rye sourdough, thickly sliced, Norfolk dapple cheese, generous pinch of white pepper. How do you like yours?
MrBen
As above but with a mature cheddar just melted and no more. And with an oxo cube sprinkled all over. Then let it melt a few secs more under the grill.
KidKruger
Loads of butter, loads of cheddar and loads of sliced onion rings on top.Grill slow to melt the cheese, then hard at the end to crispen the onion a bit.
red devil
These days it's granary bread but white is better, Cheshire cheese (naturally crumbly), HP sauce...
aquarius moon
This thread could provide amazing ideas. My cheese on toast has always been just CHEESE ON TOAST!
PeckhamRose
Spread a little vegemite on the toast (or Marmite if you prefer; I prefer Vegemite), before putting the cheese on, whichever cheese you choose.

Why must EVERYTHING be fancied up these days?If I want cheese and other ingredients on toast I'll ask for it, but to me cheese on toast means cheese on toast with maybe a drop of sauce or sprinkle of seasoning. I'm a red Leicester fan.
Otta
See what Jeremy just described sounds good (except the tartare sauce) but it's not cheese on toast, it's a toasties that includes cheese.
Jeremy
Otta Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> but it's not cheese on toastI know that! It's a "dish" which contains cheese on toast as an ingredient/component. Cheese on toast also makes a good substitute for a burger bun.But plain old cheese on toast - with a dash of worcester sauce - is good too! jimbo1964
Rye bread with cheddar cooked util bubbling and just starting to brown. Twist of black pepper and a dusting of paprika. Unfortunately as I'm currently on a low sats diet this pleasure is denied. However, mashed avocado on toast is proving to be a good alternative. maxxi
Used to go to a market stall that, as well as doing dripping on toast, served what they called American Toast - mashed up tinned tomatoes with bacon fat added (they kept it bubbling on a stove and added more toms and bacon grease as and when it got grilled - kind of a never ending stockpot) spread on toast then overlaid with sliced cheddar and grilled. That with a mug of Oxo.
Louisa
For me a thick sliced bloomer or twist loaf, toasted under a grill on one side. A strong grated Cheddar or Red Leicester grated onto the untoasted side (a spread of english mustard or Worcester Sauce first is optional). Toast until slightly brown and bubbling, and brown sauce or ketchup for dipping on the side. Louisa.
Jeremy
I reckon you need to grill the cheesey side for a bit before putting the cheese on, otherwise it goes a bit soggy.

Just enough to dry in out a bit. Any butter? Or is the fat from the cheese enough?
Jah Lush
Tomato sauce, pepperoni, red pepper and olives. Oh, hang on that's a pizza.
Seabag
I usually buy a PizzaThen cut it into a square shape (with sizzors), then put that under the grill
womanofdulwich
I remember a girl phoning in on a radio show recently who made toast in the toaster, then put the cheese on and then put it in the microwave- ingenious ( I don't think she had a grill). Jeremy
I have been known to do that WOD. It's a quicker way of doing it, but it goes a bit soggy, and no chance of a browned, slightly crisp top.
