New Photos & Memories

JOHNNYBOY

Recommended Posts

Great memories JOHNNYBOY. Some of those photographs feel like they were taken only yesterday. Great to see some input from computedshorty on the input pages. I wonder if you have any photographs of the Italian family who ran an ice cream shop on North cross road in the 1930's? Or the pawnbrokers on the corner of Lacon/North Cross road? Same era.

Louisa.

Thanks Louisa for your kind words, I wish I did have some photos of the places you mention, unfortunately I don't, but I am always on the look out for new material, I have had quite a bit of help from people who lived in East Dulwich many years ago, I have also uploaded many of my own family photos, my Brother has just found some more photos which he is going to lend me which I shall upload as soon as I can, just trying to make my website as interesting as possible for anyone that might be interested

Great stuff Johnnyboy.

Don't suppose by any chance you have anything on The Lord Hill pub, Hill Street, Peckham do you?

Was my nan's pub for several years until it was demolished in 1972. By all accounts full of villans and dodgy fellas who looked out for her and called her duchess.

I remember The Lord Hill (I lived nearby)

Only ever went there once myself shortly before it closed..

Did you live nearby Otta ?

Do you remember the Dutch Boy Laundry. You may be too young.

No I was brought up on Whateley Road. But my nan had the Lord Hill (it closed 6 years before I was born, by which time she'd moved to Devon).

So you could have been served by my nan or possibly even my old man.

Ok.. When you said nan's pub I thought she just drank there..

Probably you dad who served me ..

I did not drink much at that time but me and my beat mate had a Brown Ale and a 1/2 a 'Mandy' each

and tried to play Darts. We were both giggling and I can remember the barman asking.

"You all right lads?"

We were the only ones in the bar at the time.

Mandies were Mandrax and they were rather lovely but were banned in this country in 1974. The American equivalent is called Quaalude (Methaqualone) a very popular drug back in the 70s. Nothing to do with fizzy drinks. They're mentioned in Ian Dury's song Billericay Dickie.

I bought a lot of brandy

when I was courting Sandy

took eight to make her randy

and all I had was shandy

another thing with Sandy

what often came in handy

was passing her a 'Mandy'

she didn't half go bandy

so you ask Joyce and Vicki

if I ever took the mickey

I'm not a flipping thicky

I'm Billericay Dickie

and I'm doing very well.

Oooh.. good excuse to play it.

And a good excuse to play this...

"Time"

Time - He's waiting in the wings

He speaks of senseless things

His script is you and me boys

Time - He flexes like a whore

Falls wanking to the floor

His trick is you and me, boy

Time - In Quaaludes and red wine

Demanding Billy Dolls

And other friends of mine

Take your time

The sniper in the brain, regurgitating drain

Incestuous and vain,

and many other last names

I look at my watch it say 9:25 and I think

"Oh God I'm still alive"

We should be on by now [x2]

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la [repeat]

You - are not a victim

You - just scream with boredom

You - are not evicting time

Chimes - Goddamn, you're looking old

You'll freeze and catch a cold

'Cause you've left your coat behind

Take your time

Breaking up is hard, but keeping dark is hateful

I had so many dreams,

I had so many breakthroughs

But you, my love, were kind, but love has left you

dreamless

The door to dreams was closed.

Your park was real dreamless

Perhaps you're smiling now,

smiling through this darkness

But all I had to give was the guilt for dreaming

We should be on by now [x5]

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la [repeat]

Yeah, time!

Many thanks Otta, unfortunately I don't have anything on The Lord Hill pub, Hill Street, Peckham, sorry about that, should anything turn up on that Pub in the near future I will let you know. My Nan & Grandad lived in Whatley Road at no 5.

When did they live there? Sure my parents would remember them, their house belonged to my mum's mum before her, and various cousins have been born there or in Dulwich Hospital.

I bought my first record in Follets. Probably 1957.

The 78rpm shellacs were in the semi-basement. Probably because they were far too heavy for the ground floor joists.

That was a transitional period. I had a choice. I went for the new-fangled 45rpm 7" vinyl.

There was also a "higher class" record store at 40 Lordship Lane: R. Mansel Jones.

This web-page has a picture of one of the gramophones sold by Jones

Best record shop was Reed's Record Shop Atwell Rd. Peckham (Off of Rye Lane)

http://www.britishrecordshoparchive.org/uploads/7/1/4/7/7147924/1403634.jpg

It was run by a seemingly elderly lady (well I was young then) and then later by her son..

They were both very knowledgeable and you could buy almost anything there. (records that is)

Does anyone remember Mrs Reed's massive shiney G-clef brooch?

No time for time-wasters at Reed's. All records, apart from a handful in the counter browser, were filed in catalogue number order behind the counter.

I bought EKL 4001 from her.

Reeds not only sold records, they were also agents for Premier drums. I bought a Premier silver sparkle drum kit from Reeds on HP and my Zildijain cymbals from "Melbourne Pianos. The group was called "The System", we eventually broke up as various members got married, myself included. Our lead singer Martin Barnes, now Martin Lee is the lead singer with 1976 Eurovision song contest winners "Brotherhood of Man".

    • The dustmen kindly broke my garden gate this morning,  so I am looking for a replacement.  I could make a complaint to the council, however I know I will have to prove it and provide a receipt,  both I can't provide. Many thanks.
    • My front gate has expired! Does anyone have an unwanted one - ideally wrought iron? Many thanks.
    • Do also remember that, whilst this is the original there is an unrelated FB presence with a (very) similar name, which might also be prayed in aid.
    • Yet another increase, its absolutely disgusting. I was charged £7.95 to send documents recorded delivery last week. I asked for the Signed for option that only costs £2.50 but the Post Office refused & said they would only send them recorded delivery.
