?50.00 notes being phased out. ???

There has just been an article on BBC 1 about ?50.00 notes being phased out.

It stated that last year no new ?50.00 notes were printed.. and there is no plan to issue a Polymer note at any time.

It also suggested that ?50.00 notes were mainly used in the criminal fraternity and often not accepted in many high street outlets.

It also stated that very few ATM's dispensed them..

Strange then that this week the ATM at Barclays Lordship Lane issued me with a ?50.00 note.

I took the note into the bank and got it changed up to smaller notes..

The counter staff told me that this was a new thing due to popular demand..

I find this very strange..

Foxy the ?50 note is not easy to dispose of on a regular night out around a few local pubs, but if you happen to be travelling into town it can be handy if you have a tab in a bar or restaurant and don't wish to take your card. Makes settling the bill easier at the end of the evening. I grant you though, this isn't a regular occurrence and probably isn't worth keeping the note going for.

I work in a shop and see quite a few. I am always suspicious of them and give them extra attention to check they are legit.

So it's kind of ironic that the only fake we've taken this year (detected by the bank) was a twenty.

The article you mention is almost a year old and is the views of an ex bank chief (who has no influence today) saying that the ?50 note should be withdrawn. Yes the BOE has said they have no plans to introduce a plastic fifty but nowhere have I found evidence that they are going to withdraw the current note, therefore your post appears to be based on speculation rather than fact.

?50 notes are useful, I often pay people in cash (for legitimate reasons) and say ?3,000 in cash is either 60 fifties, 150 twenties or 300 tens... It makes it a no brainer to carry a smaller (in volume) bundle of notes rather than what feels like a carrier bag full of smaller notes.

Foxy happy scaremongering (sorry Christmas)

My post was mainly about getting one from the ATM

The Header ?50.00 notes being phased out. ??? (note the question marks. ???)

If you have any problems with anything else in my post, contact the BBC.

P.S.. I certainly would not accept ?3,000 in 50's from any one.

Thank you for that Ianr.. Very informative. It was the Guy from Money Box Paul Lewis.. ?

Kind of proves Foxy was NOT scare mongering and is not losing his Marbles.

Just reporting a BBC News Article.

For lot's of reasons, the powers that be would seem to be keen on us moving to a cashless society. I'm already carrying way less cash than a few years back with contactless etc. If you think about it cashless basically hands control to the state if it chose to exercise it. So...big picture is much more worrying than the convenience benefits.

Think of all those cash based businesses that have been skimming the tax man for years - already starting to get harder....

Not sure I see how it hands control to the state? All of the payment backbone is run by private companies? If anything cashless is less controlled by the state?

    • I'm basing it on 20+ years cycling in London and seeing the absolute biggest rule-breakers being my fellow cyclists. I once stopped at a zebra crossing to let a man cross and a cyclist behind me called me a putain for stopping.  I've even witnessed a grown man aggressively ringing his bell and swearing at a four year old child for not getting out of his way.... on a footpath.... in Burgess Park.  I genuinely cannot remember the last time a cyclist stopped for me at a pedestrian crossing.  They give the rest of us cyclists and bad name and turn the traffic against us.
    • Sorry to hear and glad you and hopefully bike OK and doesn't put you off cycling. Please do inform the police even if that sounds a waste of time.  Do consider going to the Motor Insurance Bureau, the slush fund set up by insurers for untraced/uninsured motorists.

    • Hi, Did any one manage to get the license number of the the white van that knocked me off my bike.   He was making an illegal left turn from Matham Grove, a one way street into East Dulwich Grove.  I had my hand up to indicate I was there but he ran me over anyway.  As I was lying on the road under my bike I noticed people had witnessed what had occurred and wondered if anyone has the registeration plate of the vehicle.   Thanks to those who helped me. Please message me here if you have that information or any videos of the event.  I would be grateful.  Relatively unharmed, bruised leg, twisted knee, sore shoulder. However, I need my bike to be looked at to check it is in good working order and road worthy. Sam
