Early stages of wasp nest

Having seen a very large wasp come and go, I investigated my loft and found the beginning stages of two new wasp nests.

I imagine they don't have much in them at the moment except the queen, and I'm not sure whether foaming wasp killer works on the early stages of wasp development.

Does anyone know?

Could I just knock the nests off with a broom or something? Would they just be rebuilt?

Or is the queen likely to be staying inside (haven't seen her for a few days) and if I use the foam I will kill her and then the rest will die if she isn't there?

I feel a bit mean, but I don't want a load of wasps in my loft.

I love it (the net) - lots of advice to spray wasps nests with WD40 (it does everything but nothing depending who you listen too).

But do it at night as wasps never attack in the night.

(take both of those statements with a pinch of salt)

OK knocked them both off the rafter with a long stick.

There is what looks like the very small beginning of what could be a third one, which I couldn't reach.

Will keep an eye on it :(

Thanks, yes, I've had two in the past and both these new ones were being built next to the remains of one of the old ones.

Though I can't understand why there were two new ones, both very small, in the early stages, and very near each other.

There is a small gap in the loft I can see daylight through which must be where the queen is getting in. I have been meaning to do something about it for ages but it's hard to get at.

    • They are not from 'rehabilitation schemes'. There are no such schemes that sell door-to-door. I have checked this myself with the probation services and been told by them that it's a scam. Trading Standards say: “Don’t deal with cold callers. Full stop. At the most innocent, they’re selling overpriced goods. At the more sinister end, they're assessing the potential for more serious crimes". It wouldn't hurt to report to the non-emergency number, 101. As Sandyman says, the police may use the information to direct future resources.
    • Can't imagine the police can do much about suspected casing of houses - sadly they don't seem able to do much even when thefts have been caught on camera. But no harm reporting - they supposedly use this data to direct future resources.

    • Hi Everyone   My aunt had a horrible fall at East Dulwich station last Thursday on 11th April.  She has suffered significant injuries and was helped by 2 kind passers by whom we would really like to thank. We also want to know if anyone saw her fall/ knows what happened as my aunt cannot recall and it would be useful for her family to know in terms of future planning.  If you are or know the passers by who assisted, called paramedics and comforted her, please do reach out - we would love to thank you.  Equally, if you happened to be there or see what happened please message and let me know.   Thanks
