I was a 14 year old punk on holiday in Devon and being 14, we all thought it was a laugh "Elvis is dead, long live punk". Diana I was asleep in SE22 and Jacko I was on here when the story broke.

I was actually alive for Kennedy cliche - unlike the majority of people on the planet - so maybe they should drop that one now eh?

I still read or occasionally hear journalists/commentators saying

"they always say everyone remembers what they were doing when they heard Kennnedy was dead".

..it's where the expression comes from

- the point being it is cited as being the first 'major' death that was spread by televsion - but as it was 1964, you'd have to have to be 55ish+ to remember this

or maybe 1963?

I heard that Elvis had died while I was at the Scheherazade nightclub in Piccadilly celebrating the conclusion of an export deal with its two young Iranian owners - the DJ announced it and started playing his songs. I had left my fianc?e sitting in our turquoise Triumph Stag parked outside, she being too young to get into the club. When I returned, I was about to get an earful for having taken so long but when told the news she just lapsed into a melancholy silence - saved by the King.

When Diana died, I was dining with friends at a belly-dancing show at the Yilmaz restaurant on LL.

Edited to make sense (see Brendan's quote of my original gibberish below).

Elvis - coming down the stairs at mums house age 6 and picking up the daily mirror for her.

Diana - again at Mum's staying with her, she was on the phone to her friend and was told - so told me.

MJ - sitting at home with my next door neighbour having some wine

I was in a nightclub in Blackpool when Elvis died. I wasn't old enough to get in but I had put on very high heels and had a face full of slap and I guess the guy on the door that night had bad eyesight so in I went. It was all Donna Summer heavy breathing - the dawn of disco. I met a friend who told me the King was dead. Surely not, I thought, the King will live forever. Have another rum and black.

Elvis - bit like Quids, I was a pogo-ing teenager, don't really remember the 'moment', only a newspaper headline 'The King is Dead', probably went to my bedroom and played the Sex Pistols at full blast...

I actually remember Bob Marley's death in '81 better, found out on the way to school, one of my mates was a huge fan, so we all did the decent thing and sat in the sixth form smoking room played his music and smoked 'herbals'- a fitting tribute...

Diana - it was a Sunday and I was visiting my mum oop north, just happened to switch on the TV about midday and saw the news reports, about 5 mins later they officially announced she had died...

MJ - came across the 'rumour reports' whilst channel hopping late at night, checked the forum and glad to note 'stringer' Quids had already started a thread...

Elvis - I was safely inside my mum's tummy, about 7 months before I made an appearance.

Diana - I was living in Liverpool, had 2 friends from London staying, so had been out on the Saturday. Came down stairs Sunday morning and put telly on to watch "Saved by the bell" or some such Sunday morning nonsense. Diana on every channel, thought it must be her birthday, until they showed a picture with the birth and death dates under it. Was then disappointed to hear they'd cancelled Liverpool Vs Newcastle that afternoon!

Jacko - At home stoned, got a text from mate, thought it was a joke, had a look at BBC website, then came on here and saw thread had alreadt started.

I remember being off my proverbial bosoms in a warehouse party in Shoreditch when some girl with spiky hair came up to me in the queue for the loos, grabbed me by the lapels and shouted, ?Barry White is dead!?

Kurt Cobain is the only famous person to die in my lifetime where the event was actually enough for me to sit up and take notice. I was a teenager and had been dragged to mass by my parents at 8 in the morning. Outside the church a fiend of mine came up to me looking sullen and showed me a clipping from the Sunday paper announcing Kurt?s death.

I don?t even remember when Dianna died. I didn?t nor will I ever care to be honest.

Elvis - I was born the same year he died so i was probably shuffling about in me Pampers

Diana - in Sheffield. I woke up - the TV had been left on - and there was a picture with her and 2 dates underneath and then I knew she had died.

MJ - asleep and I got a text from a pal and I thought she was winding me up

I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned the death of John Lennon - as shocking to me at the time as being told JFK was dead as I left a schoolboy chess match... Elvis was not such a shock - he'd been in decline for ages after all.

Elvis I was a teenager visiting friends in MissHippy (is how folks from Mississippi say 'Mississippi') when Elvis died. It Was Incredible. He meant nothing to me (sorry), so talk about being in the wrong place. Every TV station and every Radio Station playing every record.

BUT when I flew home, and landed at the Airport and my Mum and Dad met me there, we had a coffee and my Mum casually broke my heart by saying, 'Oh, who was that bloke who died that you liked?' I said I did not like Elvis, and she said no, that other one. Heart pounding, and this teenage girl's heart broke that day when my insensitive Mum casually finally remembered that MARK BOLAN died whilst I was in America. The trip home to Margate was worse that day than any other trip to Margate has ever been. And they're normally not that brilliant.

Jill Dando - no, ok.

Diana, I'd got up specially early to go shopping at Tescos when it opened at 11 on a Sunday morning and I remembered seeing the headlines on the News of the World and I just thought they were referring to some joke. It never sunk in they were being serious, as NOTW so rarely is! When I came home and heard the news, I put the telly on for the whole rest of the day.

Shergar going missing? Was at a Laurie Anderson concert at Hammersmith Odeon when my mate told me Shergar had gone missing.

When Tony Curtis dies I shall be inconsolable.

But Marc Bolan - never got over that.

The night Diana died I was setting my radio alarm for an early start to Anfield. Must have been just after midnight and Edwina Currie (on her Radio 5 talk show) announced Diana car crash in Paris. Radio Alarm went off next morning about 6 a.m. to the tune of the National anthem and I momentarily waited for the inevitable news. Walking through London Bridge train station an hour later, passed the Sunday papers stand and they all reported on the crash but with the Telegraph and Express both headlining with Diana is Dead. Still have that Express final edition.

We all turned back at Stafford when it was announced Liverpool v Newcastle game was called off.

A little over 4 years later 9/11 took place and they didn't bother cancelling any football that night..

Elvis.

I wasn't born yet.

Diana.

My brother came and woke me up and told me that she'd wrapped herself round an Arab. Yes, that was one of my Dad's jokes. I was 13.

Jacko.

For some reason my dad phoned me up in the evening of his death to let me know he'd moonwalked his way to heaven. Yes, another one of his howlers.

Incidently, I lost a great deal of respect for my dad when I asked him where he was when Neil Armstrong landed on the Moon. He'd fallen asleep!

    • Plenty for sale online from various ticket vendors but you'll need to part with £250 and upwards by the looks of it. Out of interest i kept an eye on the prices for the England and Italy Euro final. At one point they were on offer for a couple of grand each. On the day sellers were obviously getting itchy feet and prices dropped somewhat but never went any lower than £400. That was a few hours before kick off. There was plenty still available half an hour before kick off.   Having been to Wembley a couple of times for play off finals i found it to be not a great place to watch football. Sat three rows back from the pitch side advertising hoardings for one game and way way up in the gods for the other. We felt to far away from the pitch on both occasions. Up in the goods was just stupid because we felt cut off as well.  I don't think it was rebuilt with acoustics in mind either. Even with most of our 25k fans singing it never sounded loud because it's pretty much uncovered and too open.   Happy hunting!
    • It doesn't work as a commercial venture.  Bit churlish to say I told you so.  I told you so.  I'll send less greetings cards.  What pees me off is international postage where you can no longer send light letters at 10 grammes, normal ones up to 20g, now all at the much more expensive 100 g  Didn't we vote to take back control and price everything according to irrational units like ounces? That's some obscure humour btw
    • Available from Monday April 8th 2024, 2on2Walkies take pride in doggie care and only walk 2 furry friends at a time. I make sure that they get plenty of doggie interaction and socialisation in the park as well as making friends. Back home happy and tired I always check that the water bowl has fresh water and always make sure the doggie is left comfortable before I leave. I'm fully insured and have a couple of slots available for local walks to either Peckham Rye Park or Dulwich Park.  Thank you!
    • Why would they only send them recorded delivery? I used the signed for option yesterday.
