I'll kick off with Simon Hattenstones article this morning which reflects a similar unease I have with football (even though he is a Man City fan and therefore already used to pain and suffering)

This is on the BBC News website today...



A teacher flew home to Wales from Toronto in Canada for a wedding, only to discover he was one year early.

Dave Barclay, 34, mistakenly thought Dave Best was marrying on 6 July 2007 after he e-mailed him at the start of the year and started making plans.


It was only when he arrived back at his mother's in Wenvoe near Cardiff he realised he had travelled 4,000 miles for a wedding 12 months away.


"I am a year early - yeah, my mates are loving it, aren't they," he said.


Easy mistake to make...

Top story of the day for me is the bungling officials in Stoke-On-Trent for failing to confirm banning powers in time so people are still happily smoking away in the town's 400 pubs and clubs. :)) And will be able to do so until August 1st.

Nice one fear - first I'd heard about it since all of the predictable headlines this morning


It reminded me of one of the events that started me on my political awakening - I was probably about 12, in smalltown Ireland and was allowed to stay up late for some reason or other.

I knew that this was an hour when political programmes were on telly (politics! bah! boring! was my motto) but they were all called things like" The Matters of The Day", or "Politics Tonight or "Jays You Wouldn't BELIEVE What Happened in The Dail Today!" so I knew what to avoid


Thought I was on to a safe bet with a show called Slants - which turned out to be a political show BUT from a satirical angle and explained to me how spin was put on everything. And I never saw things the same way again....


Ok not a great story but when I heard about the strop this morning I automatically assumed "bet that didn't happen"


Then again, that's an attitude that has got me into trouble on some threads.....

      I think insurance scams do happen but I thought there had been a crackdown on them recently. In the past insurance companies seemed to just pay out and everyone's premium goes up to cover it. My partner was a victim a few years ago, she was parking and touched a bumper of the next car. There was no mark and the other driver just waved my partner away. A month later we received a letter claiming there were four people in the other car and two of them were so badly injured they could not work. Our insurer was a rare one that actually fought the case and pretty much on the steps of the court the scammers "dropped hands" and case was closed. i thought at the time that was a good result but I later saw that my insurer had run up a £2000 legal bill and didn't get to ask for costs as there was no court case – we didn't have to pay it but again, it's this sort of thing that pushes all premiums up. And no action was taken against the other party despite them clearly being scammers who were revealed to have done this before and had effectively admitted their own statements were a pack of lies. Sorry to hijack your thread, just getting this off my chest as your post brought it all flooding back!

      Our child is in their last term at Goose Green, and after 7 wonderful years we are very sad to be leaving such a wonderful school and it’s special community. Being 2 form entry, It’s one of the smaller schools in the area and it’s also very diverse with an amazing spirit. Brilliant Art and Music departments, staff and a new library.
