Oh, I didn't see it so can't give a good answer on what contributed to the cloudy sky tonight (was sadly imprisoned in a horrible glass and steel structure till quite late). But I do know that all volcanic eruptions release a variety of gases, commonest being water vapour, carbon dioxide and sulphur. Different gases are released depending on what type of plate boundary the volcano is at.
