Does anyone know where I can get some mothballs? I used to buy them in the hardware shop in Lordship Lane but they informed me yesterday that they are not being made any more. Or does anyone have a stash that I can buy from them? I find they are very effective in the garden to deter cats as they cant stand the smell! Many thanks for any leads.

Do they really deter cats? Where exactly do you put them and how often do they need changing? Do they need to stay dry? There are 3 cats who are constantly taking ownership of my garden and it doesn't help that my daughter has a major cat phobia so won't go outside if they are around. Be great to find a solution.

Napthalene Occurs Naturally. You can get it here!

Virgin Galactic are upstairs!

Trace amounts of naphthalene are produced by magnolias and specific types of deer, as well as the Formosan subterranean termite, possibly produced by the termite as a repellant against "ants, poisonous fungi and nematode worms."[5] Some strains of the endophytic fungus Muscodor albus produce naphthalene among a range of volatile organic compounds, while Muscodor vitigenus produces naphthalene almost exclusively.[6]

Naphthalene has been found in meteorites. It has also been discovered in the interstellar medium in the direction of the star Cernis 52 in the constellation Perseus.[7]

Good question. Business takes me to the States every so often where the things are easily found and MUCH cheaper (large packets! yes!) than the half-a-handful-at-a-time I used to be able to buy here. Not a solution for everyone, to be sure, but...

Many thanks all for all the helpful answers. Yes they do assist in putting off the local cats - just scatter a few with space in between and replace every few weeks - they start dissolving if there is rain but you just simply replace. Cheapest and most effective solution I've found for my garden.

    • Do you think cyclists running red lights or cycling on pavements is just fine then? A red light is the occasion when a pedestrian may be more likely to cross a busy road. Because there are significant penalties for car drivers, the vast majority of drivers do stop at a red light; I rarely see cyclists stop. As I said before, the other day a I witnessed a Lime bike shoot through a red light at speed and nearly take out a child. Had the bike connected, that would have been a nasty injury.  As Rockets has pointed out, there clearly is an issue with this as City of London Police are cracking down on cyclists.
    • My friends wife is a school teacher and they had some ducklings in eggs Last week at the school and they hatched my friends wife bought them home for weekend as they couldnt be left alone at the school and she was ment to take back to the school Monday but read the bottom of the letter that comes with the eggs and when they have hatched your ment to call the company who breeds them etc and they will collect ( they charge £30 per egg for the schools ) and when they collect them they take them back to wherever they come from and kill the baby ducklings by gassing them , she got upset and refused to take them back and has contacted an animal sanctuary who will pick them up this week from her house , as an animal lover I think that is absolutely discusting and if anyone's school has this sort of thing going on please get other parents together and get it stopped
