Porridge - how do you make yours?

Or more specifically, for your kids in the morning?

Our daughter starts school in sept so breakfast will be at home. The only thing that keeps her full for more than 20min is porridge but I find it a bit if a faff to make in the morning and it takes ages to cool down. Any tips, please? I remember a couple of years back there was a thread about it but can't seem to find it. Thanks!

For the kids, I put oats and enough milk to cover (plus a cm or so) in a jug, in the microwave for 2.5 mins. When finished, I stir in cold milk to being it up to the right consistency. Very easy, and cool enough to eat straight away.

For me, if I'm organised, I put oats and boiling water in a bowl before it go to bed. Microwave for 2 mins in the morning and stir in a little bit of milk.

I cook mine on the hob for a few mins, so the night before I soak the oats

in the saucepan, so ready to go first thing.

Then when cooked, I stir in a lot of cold stuff - natural yogurt and honey, which

seems to make the porridge easier to wolf down than just milk.

Sachets of Oat so simple, 2 minutes in the microwave. Chuck in some honey and serve with a little jug of cold milk (like you get with a pot of tea in a cafe) which my girl likes to pour in.

Sachets are a more expensive way of doing it, but they're often on offer and they take away so much faff that they're worth it.

Plus no saucepan to wash up.

You can also do it in a slow cooker overnight and use the pinhead oatmeal. I like to grate an apple into raw porridge oats, and then add yogurt, honey and lemon juice, plus fresh seasonal fruit. Or put some apple juice or milk into the porridge oats and put in fridge overnight. Then add yogurt and fruit in morning.

    • Nauris and his team have done fantastic work in our garden for the second year. Last year, they sanded, oiled the deck and did an immaculate job of paving the area around the deck. Then two weeks ago, I asked Nauris if he could build a garden shed, sand and oil the deck and paint and repair the fences. Again, another excellent job and he was great at fitting in a couple of small fixes. We are really pleased with the shed which is well made and painted and blends in well to the garden. Nauris is really respectful and always left everything tidy in the evening and spotlessly clean at the end of the job. Nauris also provided a clear quote for the work at the beginning.  I recommend Nauris Graudins (and his team) very highly - [email protected]
    • So who actually checks that the above is followed - are there going to be "surprise" inspections ?
    • We have used Aria and AFE Plumbing for many years on a number of jobs - installing new taps and showerhead, unblocking pipes.  He is always quick to respond and able to swiftly attend to the issue, easy to communicate with, and makes sure the job gets done. Definitely recommended.
    • Well you've said i'm taking a pro cash stance too far. Perhaps not twisting- i used the wrong words but you are putting words in my mouth no? I'm not one for tech, that's for sure but how do you come to the conclusion i'm pro cash? I merely pointed out that cashless and using cards / card readers/ oyster readers/ and other terminals etc aren't risk free. If i was pro cash i wouldn't be using a card on occasions. Indeed. You can say that again. Irony and self awareness not your strong point is it? Indeed. Just as well you're not the judgemental type hey!!   What a strange and arrogant entity you are.
