Re-applying for JAPS and Alleyns

I see that these schools take pupils at 4+, 7+ and 11+, and that the size of the intakes/number of applicants at each level varies. My question is whether it is typical to, say, apply at 4+ and then try again at 7+ and/or 11+ if unsuccessful?

Aside from putting the poor little mites through the assessment ordeal repeatedly (!) is there a reason why you wouldn't just give it a go at each level? In other words, does anyone know/have experience of whether it prejudices them if your child has already been ?rejected? before (even if it was at 4 years old)?!

And does anyone have a crystal ball I could borrow??
