Girls names - help!

Recommended Posts

OK, so with thanks to Polly D who started the boys names thread, I have been inspired to start a similar thread asking for girls names ideas. I have only 5ish weeks til my due date, and the bump remains resolutely nameless. Neither my husband nor I have come up with anything we *really* love, despite having a longlist of names from the first time round (before we knew our first was a boy).

I'm firmly in the 'uncommon' (but not totally made up) name camp, so anything in the current top 100 most popular names is out for me (shame, I love Lola and Florence amongst others), and our surname is only one syllable, so I think her first name should be at least two syllables...

Suggestions gratefully received!

You will find fewer of the traditional names appearing on the list. Eg Mary, Susan, Elizabeth, Catharine, Victoria, Alexandra etc. Then there is the Victorian/flowery category (Isabella, lily, Evie, Lola, Florence, loveday etc.) and then there is the third category. I'd go traditional if I were you, to avoid duplication or pigeonholing in a certain year or social grouping.

I like Rosemary shortened to Romy

Also like connie/constance (friend has a little girl called Connie, really sweet)

My top girls name before I found out I was having a boy last time was Polly! Which Polly D on here knows about hee hee.

Also like Annie - could be short for one of the more unusual versions of Anne eg Annette.

We have a long surname so our girls names were short for #3. We ended up with Kate (which everyone assumes is short for Katherine, she is going to grow up thinking her name is "no, just Kate"). Midwife said she was the only Kate she had delivered in recent memory so with luck she will be the only one in her year.

Also love Annie (have used Anne as a middle name). Love the "old lady" names making a comeback, Dot, Betty, Matilda etc.

Ah - love thinking of girls names, have no idea whether or not they're in the top 100 though!

Elodie

Layla

Rowan

Marnie

Isla

Ivy

Of the above also love Constance & Elizabeth (so many lovely variations - Lizzy, Eliza, Beth, Betty, betsy, great if you want choice later on)!!!

My girl is Alexa Ruby. Ruby after me, my entire family call me Ruby. I never call her Alexa, she has always always been Lex. Other top girls names I love are:

Karis

Thea

Bridget

Meredith

Iris

Adriana

Scout (was very high on our list for Lex, even right up till being wheeled into theatre)

If I have a third, and it's a girl, she'll be Karis Rio :)

Poor Thea! I am a Jane and that is so dull. I used to go to a monthly meeting at work that consisted of 4 of us all called Jane and one of the contacts that we had to discuss was another Jane. Somehow we never got confused but I hated that my name was so common. I now regard it as classic but there are still millions of us.

Consequently, I tried for less popular names for my brood. We have a Lilian who goes mad that I refuse to shorten it to Lily as that is v popular. She prefers the short version as it is on all the named tat you can buy all over the place. People automatically shorten it and that annoys me massively and stick two ls in the middle, which is an Americanisation not the traditional European spelling.

My two rules are, as I said on the boy's thread, not names that can be confused with surnames and intuitive spelling.

Love both these threads.

    • It doesn't work as a commercial venture.  Bit churlish to say I told you so.  I told you so.  I'll send less greetings cards.  What pees me off is international postage where you can no longer send light letters at 10 grammes, normal ones up to 20g, now all at the much more expensive 100 g  Didn't we vote to take back control and price everything according to irrational units like ounces? That's some obscure humour btw
    • Available from Monday April 8th 2024, 2on2Walkies take pride in doggie care and only walk 2 furry friends at a time. I make sure that they get plenty of doggie interaction and socialisation in the park as well as making friends. Back home happy and tired I always check that the water bowl has fresh water and always make sure the doggie is left comfortable before I leave. I'm fully insured and have a couple of slots available for local walks to either Peckham Rye Park or Dulwich Park.  Thank you!
    • Why would they only send them recorded delivery? I used the signed for option yesterday.
    • > however I know I will have to prove it and provide a receipt,  both I can't provide. So what leads you to say that the dustmen have done damage to it?
