Advice on pruning/shaping rose bush

Recommended Posts

I have a lovely rose bush outside my front door that is growing up and over in an unweildy and haphazard manner.

I'd like some advice and guidance on how to prune and shape it from an expert.

Does anyone out there know about this or able to recommend someone?

Depeding on the kind of rose, you should be able to be fairly brutal. Is it a climber? Is it growing up around the door or just sitting next to the door? Roses are best pruned eaither in autumn or early spring. Essentially prune off the parts you don't want; if you fancy being more technical about it, prune to outward-facing buds (the last bud you leave on will dictate the direction of growth, so you can control the direction it takes this way).

If you can bear it, leave it to flower in a wild and unruly fashion this summer, then give it a prune this autumn, otherwise you will simply prune away the buds and flowers and have no blooms this year.

Hope that helps.
