Get fresh, organic, local food with the Food Assembly

Recommended Posts

The Food Assembly is a group of local residents who select local farmers & food producers and group buy from them directly online. It is a French concept who started 4 years ago, it has crossed over here in the UK very recently (about 6 months ago) and is now happening next to you, in Forest Hill.

Supermarkets dictate how food must be produced and the result is that we - consumers - end up with vegetables full of pesticides, fruits from all around the world and meat and diary stuffed with antibiotics! They take big margins on producers who end up with almost nothing and are forced to produce at an industrial level.

The Food Assembly initiative is to boycott those supermarkets, buy directly from local producers and get good, fresh and local food at an affordable price!

So how does this all work? Pretty simple indeed: you create a login online on the Forest Hill branch of the website (plug in your postcode and it should come up) - order online before the Tuesday of any given week. Then producers deliver your order every Thursday from 6-8pm in The Railway Telegraph pub, 112 Stanstead road, and you just have to pick it up.

The money is fairly redistributed to the producers (8% go to the platform and to the Assembly host, all remaining to the producer) and you know what you get from the source as you can meet them in person, talk to them and even visit their farms (we'll organize visits in spring when the weather will be more enjoyable).

Of course this approach is making a lot of noise on media and social networks. You can find out more about the Food Assembly in the BBC News, Guardian and on social networks.

You can join us for free registering here: https://thefoodassembly.com/en/assemblies/49. No tie-ins, just have a look to the wide range of products already available. You can also come and visit next Thursday at the pub to see by yourself and chat with us but don't forget that you can only order online before Tuesday midnight.

Hope to see you soon joining the food revolution!

From Thursady 5th March, The Forest Hill Food Assembly will welcome World of Zing, the spice specialist that will make your meals even tastier! All blends are made with the best spices in Mile End. We have selected for you a range of flavored sea salts, chillies, pepper, pop-corn seasonings and home made cocktails. World of Zing's products will be available every fortnight, so don't miss the opportunity to try them now.

We also offer this week vegetables, meat, bread, cheese, beer, jam, granola, cakes & tarts.

Food for thought is probably as important as what is in our plate. Even better, ideas are free and can be shared easily

again and again with a book. That's why we now have a library with various books about Food (food industry, essay,

cookbook). The principle is simple: have a look, pick the one you like, bring it back 2 weeks later.

Please remember that the market will be open until Tuesday night for the collection of Thursday 5th from 5:3 to 7:30pm in the Railway Telegraph.

Hi Alzea,

I know that it can be annoying for you to register first if you want to see the product catalogue. The web platform was built so and the tech team is working on it to allow you see the products without registering. Notice that the registration is free and there is no commitment to buy anything. If you are not interested anymore, you can ask the tech team to remove you from the member list.

The reason why we post here for our Forest Hill Food Assembly is simple:

- we have members living in East Dulwich who pick up their order on their way back home. We even have members who come from Bromley!

- If someone likes the idea, he/she could be interested in opening one Food Assembly in East Dulwich.

Does that make sense?

Kind Regards,

Audrey B.

Hi!

The market is now open until Tuesday 5th May. It is time to have a look on our products catalogue.

For this new sale, we have a flagship product that you might have never eaten yet: the nettle!

Stingy as they are, these plants are nevertheless a gift to anyone who favours cooking with local, seasonal, fresh ingredients.

The flavour is irrefutably "green", somewhere between spinach, cabbage and broccoli, with a unique hint of nettliness: a sort of slight, earthy tingle in the mouth. If you like your greens, you'll like nettles.

The only barrier to enjoyment is the nettle's ferocious stings, but these are easily dealt with: handle them with washing-up gloves. As soon as they are cooked, they don't sting anymore and you can it them without fear.

Brockmans Farm gathers them for you and pack them into bags.

You could make a delicious nettle soup, nettle risotto with sorrel, nettle quiche with bacon, nettle pesto etc. You will find a lot of recipes on the internet.

Marsh produce inaugurates a new sausage made with nettle tips and mint that we are very curious to try tomorrow 30th April!

We will share nettle recipes on our Facebook page, so have a look and share your experience with nettles!

We also have sorrel, spinach, chives, fresh bunch garlic as new vegetables and beer, bread, cheese, honey, granola, seeds butter and pastas (including mushroom and parmesan ravioli)

Everything looking delicious!

If you love the Forest Hill Food Assembly products, want to have them regularly but can't pick them up because you are busy or if you want to help your neighbours and the Food Assembly, you could write your request/offer on the Forest Hill Facebook page to find a neighbour who could pick up your order for you or you could do a favour.

We need your support and a little push as it is quiet at the moment.

Cheers!

The Forest Hill Food Assembly wins Best Food Initiative in BBC Food Awards

The Food Assembly picks up the gong for ?Best British Food Initiative? at the BBC Food and Farming Awards in Bristol.

Dubbed the 'Oscars of the Food World?, The Food Assembly received the Best British Food Initiative title for bringing communities together to support local food producers, and for its far-reaching benefits around Britain.

The Food Assembly, with over 700 members in Forest Hill, enables people to buy directly off farmers and local foodmakers, and were congratulated on its innovative platform that?s changing the way we eat.

Every week Food Assembly customers order food online from their local Assembly in Forest Hill, before picking it up at a weekly pop?-up market in the Railway Telegraph pub. All the food comes from within 100 miles of the area.

Presenter of BBC Radio 4?s The Food Programme and founder of the awards Sheila Dillon says: ?We really wanted to find out who the food heroes were in their neighbourhoods ? anyone, any organisation, that through food was making life in Britain better.?

Each Assembly creates paid work for a local host. The Forest Hill Assembly is hosted by food?-obsessed Audrey Bouttier & Vincent Spehner who both love to share their passion of food with others.

Vincent says: ?I am so proud and delighted that The Food Assembly has won the Best British Food Initiative. Not only has it brought a new access to local food to our family, friends and community, but it's also helping farmers and foodmakers get paid what they deserve for their work.?

People living in Forest Hill can discover their local Food Assembly here https://thefoodassembly.com/en.

The Food Assembly is currently expanding and if anyone is interested in starting a Food Assembly in their area, the opportunity to register is here https://thefoodassembly.com/en.
