Restoring a mirror - any tips?

Hi there,

Does anyone know how I can remove a number painted in gold on a mirror? Have tried looking on the Internet and not found anything. We bought an old mirror on eBay that used to be above a hotel door and hence the number on it.

Any tips gratefully received! Otherwise will ask at DIY shop.

It should just scrape off with a sharpish chisel or a round ended table knife.
