Best garden centre near East Dulwich?

Recommended Posts

I actually don't think the one next to North Dulwich station is that unreasonable - and as you say they do have very nice pots and planters, so if that's what you need then worth a look. Shannons in Forest Hill off the South Circular has a bigger range and is slightly cheaper admittedly.

There's also a new garden centre which looks to have a decent range of bedding and other plants opposite Nunhead station under the first arch.

The garden centre at north Dulwich has improved a lot since the ED one closed down. They used to predominantly sell pots and troughs, with only a few plants, but they now stock many more, and have a good selection of houseplants too.

Along with the two garden centres in West Dulwich, they probably are more pricey than larger garden centres, but that's the trade off for having a local independent business. Looking forward to checking out the new garden centre at Nunhead soon...

If you want bedding plants, herbs or small shrubs, the stall in Northcross Road market on Saturdays is very good. I bought tomato plants there last year, as well as plants for hanging baskets and bedding. I also like Alleyn park garden centre near West Dulwich.

Another big endorsement for Phoebe's it has by far the most extensive choice in the surrounding area. I am gutted to hear it is closing down!

if you're desperate try

I went to Homebase in Penge on Thursday to get some compost.

There were large numbers of dead and dying plants in various different parts of the outdoor area.

It looked as though somebody had forgotten the watering. For several days. Or else had done a very slapdash job and missed many of the plants.

Some of the bedding was marked down in price but many plants (and veg plants) appeared to be still on sale at the full price despite being in terrible condition.

I know Homebase is mostly a DIY place and not a specialist garden centre, but that's just unacceptable. The manager/staff in the gardening area should not be working there if they don't know even the minimal basics of looking after plants.

And once it's too late, surely dead plants should be removed from customers' sight? (Though there were so many of them, maybe there was nowhere large enough to put them :( )

    • It doesn't work as a commercial venture.  Bit churlish to say I told you so.  I told you so.  I'll send less greetings cards.  What pees me off is international postage where you can no longer send light letters at 10 grammes, normal ones up to 20g, now all at the much more expensive 100 g  Didn't we vote to take back control and price everything according to irrational units like ounces? That's some obscure humour btw
    • Available from Monday April 8th 2024, 2on2Walkies take pride in doggie care and only walk 2 furry friends at a time. I make sure that they get plenty of doggie interaction and socialisation in the park as well as making friends. Back home happy and tired I always check that the water bowl has fresh water and always make sure the doggie is left comfortable before I leave. I'm fully insured and have a couple of slots available for local walks to either Peckham Rye Park or Dulwich Park.  Thank you!
    • Why would they only send them recorded delivery? I used the signed for option yesterday.
