Architect recommendations please (side return project)

Can anyone recommend a local architect that you've worked with on a project such as side return or other extension? I'm looking for a few ideas to look at kitchen side return, but don't want to use a design and build company as all the prices received are just crazy so far.

Thanks!

We used Chryssanthi Perpidou at Office 25 Architects - she is a local mum - to draw up plans for a granny annexe in our garden. For personal reasons we have decided not to go ahead but the design was great and she managed to get the council's approval.

I know she has done a lot of other work locally so she can probably give you some more relevant examples of work.

Hi,

We used Charles from a local company called Context Architecture. He was very good. We got planning permission for a loft conversion and roof terrace in a conservation area which was not straightforward. We got exactly what we wanted and they were remarkably better priced than others too! We had an initial visit (without any obligation to proceed) which was very informative. Highly recommend! Their website is: www.context-architecture.co.uk

Good luck!

Stephen Turvil http://www.stephenturvilarchitects.com/ - we're using him right now for a side return project. He's been great. We used an architect because our building has had various add-ons built over the years (not by us) and we have a dropped ceiling above the kitchen, and altogether our side return is not at all straight forward. Stephen has had some great ideas and we have arrived at a plan we're very excited about. If yours is a straight forward job, I'd just use the architect your builder uses for drawings for planning permission etc.

Side return extensions are usually an expensive undertaking, I think, as they involve new foundations and a lot of 'steel'. We're expecting ours to cost twice what it cost us to convert the loft, and perhaps a bit more, for example. Having said that, ours involves fixing the first floor issues as well.

    • Cyclists certainly do have a bit of a perception problem at the moment and when I cycle I see a lot of examples of arrogance and ignorance that gives all cyclists a bad name - it does seem that many cyclists have caught the entitlement bug many drivers seem to have.
    • But Spartacus didn't mention the significant amounts of land being used for car storage - that was most definitely you.   And I am afraid when you apply your same measure to other transport uses (like cycleways and cycle lanes - Malumbu is your stat on the 360 kms of cycle network cycleways or cycle lanes?) then it most definitely is relevant for the debate.   Should we assume then that if all this ULEZ money and government bailout money is being poured into TFL then the system is, financially at least, broken or is it a case that the money is being mis-spent (like the DV junction project)?
    • Contact your SNT (police). An old friend of mine (now deceased) was a 'victim' of a door to door scam some years ago. He mentioned it to our local SNT police officers who found that several ED residents had been visited by these ;salespeople. It was arranged that my friend asked the scammers to return on a certain day and time when he had some money to purchase their goods. Police in plain clothes outside in street watching. with a uniformed officer in the house - scammers returned and were arrested.
