SEMAS fish and chips shop Underhill Road

I have just been to purchase some fish from SEMAS in Underhill Road. Because I said I didn?t want chips the sales person was quite rude to me as if we English had no idea how to eat. I was quite upset at his rudeness and did tell him that it wasn?t a way to talk to his clientele and that I won?t be going there again. The fish was dry and not good at all and very much over priced. The former owners were much nicer and their fish was better quality too. Moral of the story, treat your customers with respect or lose them.

I use Semas regularly.. ALL the staff there are lovely.

Always friendly Banter with all their customers.

Fish cooked cooked to order ( You have to wait 8-12 Mins)

No Problem with that. Fish always Fresh. Cod .. Soft white flakes. Haddock is good too.

Chips are good.

Large portions. Competitively priced. Fish is expensive these days.

If you think Semas are expensive, try Olleys in Herne Hill.

I find them lovely... Always welcoming, remembering who we are..

Never minds me just getting a chicken kebab on its own.. or fish with chips..

They are nice to me, English or otherwise..

They haven?t commented on my wife?s Welshness yet... They don?t do a traditional Welsh half and half chips/rice combo though so the offence of asking for that has yet to happen..

They?ve even let the mongrel Welsh/English kids eat sausage and chips outside...

Myself, my wife and son have been there quite a few times for the mixed kebab with chips and Tango.

The food in my opinion rivals in taste and beat hands down in quantity some restaurant served dishes of the same kind and is fairly priced.

Always been made to feel welcome and table has been brought outside for us as that's the way we like it.

Never realised it was our ethnicity that was behind the great and friendly service we've always received.

One learns I guess.

Hopefully there aren't actually that many, it's just that it's very noticeable when it happens.

ETA: I rarely eat fish and chips, and don't think I've ever been to SEMAs, but that OP has just made me want to go there just to support them!

Foxy, a couple of years ago, didn't you suspect that they might be serving pollock instead of cod?

YES BNG . That was when it was Run by a Turkish woman called Rosie. (not her real Name.)

She moved to Rose's fish bar in East Dulwich Road. She was NOT the owner. I'm told it was owned by a guy called John. Not sure if she is still there.

The current owner (of Semas) has turned the place around after the decline under the previous manager (Rosie)

Please try to keep up.

Nice Try though. need to get up earlier.

I wasn't being snippy, Foxy. I remembered that thread because after Sea Cow shut, I wanted another place to go for fish and chips, and that discussion decided me against going to Sema's. I'd have had no reason to keep up with any news about change of ownership etc.

As it happens, Emily's fits the bill very well for my Friday night haddock.
