Recommend a Dentist

I've used the Irish lady at the North Cross Road dentist and although she's very pleasant I did feel a little ripped off. I had a checkup and a scale and polish and they charged me the Band 2 ?45.60 rather than the Band 1 ?16.50. When I queried this afterwards they said that they had given me a more thorough scale and polish than was included in the normal Band 1 charge. This was never explained to me beforehand and I paid up but felt that it was a way for them to make more money. I would guess that they get paid more by the NHS/PCT for Band 2 work than Band 1. Band 2 includes fillings etc of which, this time round I had none. Band 1 includes a checkup, x-rays, scale & polish etc - see attachment for more info.

Just wanting to make you aware of what you should be paying for.

I recommend the North Cross Road one too. I've never seen Mr Daly but I have had a lovely lady who I hope is still there - forget her name....it's been a while methinks its time for an appt! :-S

I think ed_pete the pricing is a guide but I don't think many dentists are very forthcoming on telling you the price before they do something. Its a shame you had that experience though as it is unfair. Only way to get round it is to ask upfront and if during the consultation they start to do more than a check-up ask for the costs so at least your expectations are set.

So, it seems that Either Bunmi at www.eastdulwichdentalcare.co.uk or North Cross are the ones?

I'm really frustrated as I went into the North Cross Road practice to register and they really put me off! It was lunch time - fair enough, but no one was on reception. I heard them all chatting having lunch, so poked my head around the corner and someone shouted out that they'd 'be with me in 2'. 10 mins and another prompt later, they were still giggling about horoscopes and refused to come out. I left.

Apart from the abysmal, unprofessional impression I got, surely there's a big security issue for them? I could have actually helped myself to anything, if I were that way inclined!

I had an appointment today at the North Cross Road and I saw a young lady who works there three day a week. She told me about Mr. Dale and the other Irish dentist; both of them left a while ago. It's a shame as Mr. Daly was very very good. Anyway I went there for a check up and a scale and polish and they charged bound 2 which is 47.00pounds instead of 17.00. I asked why this price and the lady at the reception said:- "NHS charges sorry". I didn't know about NHS charges until now and so I couldn't reply anything. Also the dentist while polishing my teeth was in a such hurry that I think she did it superficially. She explained that she didn't know about my request!! I felt completely ripped off for the service received!

Thank Ed_pete for the information. Very useful for next time.

We started using the Northcross Road dentists because of all the recommendations for Mr Daly. He was really nice, but I cannot recommend them now he has retired. There seem to be issues at reception, I've been left on hold and forgotten about, and the guy answering today was really quite rude. I'm afraid the Irish lady I find rather patronising and talks over you when you try to explain whats been happening, and we have also had some dispute over fee bands. So,we have now gone to a different practice recommended on this site.

Have used Northcross Rd myself as it's close - the major downside to it is it seems perpetually over-busy so there were long waits both times I was there. For a filling I ended up waiting nearly an hour and a half. The nurses also seemed a bit shoddy, making a few cockups and being slow. However, the dentist & reception were very friendly and when I lost part of my filling and went back the next day, they didn't charge me for fixing it without any quibble at all. So, mixed basically...

Have to write to disagree with posts regarding the Lordship Lane dentist. I have been going there for five years and have had really good, efficient service. There has recently been a change in staff and the new dentist seems equally as professional. I wonder why people are so against this place, particularly poor when these comments are not backed up with anything.

    • You can request for them to come and collect your full bins again https://forms.southwark.gov.uk/ShowForm.asp?fm_fid=1879 They usually come on whatever day your rubbish/recycling collection day is. If you aren't going to be in, leave them somewhere that they can find it. If you don't need replacements, just leave a note on the full ones that a replacement isn't needed.  They usually come quite early, so it's better to leave them outside if you can.
    • Just wondering- what were they arrested for? If you remember
    • Cyclists certainly do have a bit of a perception problem at the moment and when I cycle I see a lot of examples of arrogance and ignorance that gives all cyclists a bad name - it does seem that many cyclists have caught the entitlement bug many drivers seem to have.
    • But Spartacus didn't mention the significant amounts of land being used for car storage - that was most definitely you.   And I am afraid when you apply your same measure to other transport uses (like cycleways and cycle lanes - Malumbu is your stat on the 360 kms of cycle network cycleways or cycle lanes?) then it most definitely is relevant for the debate.   Should we assume then that if all this ULEZ money and government bailout money is being poured into TFL then the system is, financially at least, broken or is it a case that the money is being mis-spent (like the DV junction project)?
