Is there a cider collective in East Dulwich?

Hi

I was wondering if anyone out there had a cider press or knows of any cider pressings going on in the area.

We have a bumper crop this year and wanted to make the best use of the Apples.

Anyone know of anything going on or who has a press we could use in exchange for some cider?

Thanks,

Hari

I've also had a glut of apples this year, and was having trouble finding enough people to give them away to. It seems to be an early fruiting tree, so there won't be much more but if enough people were interested, I'd definitely like to be involved in some kind of coop. How much does an apple press cost, roughly? Does anyone know?

You need specific cider apples to make cider - different from normal eating kinds of apples (particularly dry and bitter).

I posted this on one of the other threads, but I've been making apple jelly this year with windfalls http://twitter.com/Hurtlepuss/status/641566243376381952. Happy to share recipes or get involved with a small group if anyone else is interested.

Thanks - interesting link. I can see how using crab apples would work to balance out the sweetness of eating apples, although I think you'd need a lot. I've made cider a couple of times with a group and was always astonished at how bitter the juice needed to be to get a good, smooth cider out of it in the long run.

Stuart Road Allotments had a press - never thought to check at the Allotment Barbecue last weekend - we have not had many pears this year from which we make a perry

There used to be one but the people who organised it moved to Manchester a while ago, I believe. There is a "beer equivalent" where groups of people grow hops in their gardens, gather them together on the same day and get a microbrewery to make a green hop beer. They sell some and the hop growers get some. I wonder if we could arrange a cider making collective along those lines. There is London Glider Cider which I think started in the same way.

It is the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness after all. I had an email today about urban gleaning and a link to the abundance network: http://www.abundancenetwork.org.uk/

There was also a tweet I think with a link to this article by George Monbiot from nearly 5 years ago: http://www.monbiot.com/2010/10/28/the-press-gang/

George is advocating pressing juice rather than going that bit further and turning it into an alcoholic drink. Cider is very difficult to get right it seems.

Just sayin.

Dog Kennel Hill primary School is running a school apple day event on 23rd Feb and I'm trying to source an apple press (and scratter for crushing the fruit if possible) to borrow for the day. If you know of anyone who would lend to the school for the day please get in touch!

Donations of local apples are also very welcome - I'm happy to pick them up. Thank you.

(The school used to use Jo and Damon's apple press - they were the people who pressed apples outside Franklins, made local cider and have moved to Manchester).

    • Plenty for sale online from various ticket vendors but you'll need to part with £250 and upwards by the looks of it. Out of interest i kept an eye on the prices for the England and Italy Euro final. At one point they were on offer for a couple of grand each. On the day sellers were obviously getting itchy feet and prices dropped somewhat but never went any lower than £400. That was a few hours before kick off. There was plenty still available half an hour before kick off.   Having been to Wembley a couple of times for play off finals i found it to be not a great place to watch football. Sat three rows back from the pitch side advertising hoardings for one game and way way up in the gods for the other. We felt to far away from the pitch on both occasions. Up in the goods was just stupid because we felt cut off as well.  I don't think it was rebuilt with acoustics in mind either. Even with most of our 25k fans singing it never sounded loud because it's pretty much uncovered and too open.   Happy hunting!
    • It doesn't work as a commercial venture.  Bit churlish to say I told you so.  I told you so.  I'll send less greetings cards.  What pees me off is international postage where you can no longer send light letters at 10 grammes, normal ones up to 20g, now all at the much more expensive 100 g  Didn't we vote to take back control and price everything according to irrational units like ounces? That's some obscure humour btw
    • Available from Monday April 8th 2024, 2on2Walkies take pride in doggie care and only walk 2 furry friends at a time. I make sure that they get plenty of doggie interaction and socialisation in the park as well as making friends. Back home happy and tired I always check that the water bowl has fresh water and always make sure the doggie is left comfortable before I leave. I'm fully insured and have a couple of slots available for local walks to either Peckham Rye Park or Dulwich Park.  Thank you!
    • Why would they only send them recorded delivery? I used the signed for option yesterday.
