New local newspaper for Dulwich

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

We are the team behind The Peckham Peculiar, a free community newspaper for Peckham and Nunhead that launched in January 2014 after raising over ?5,000 on Kickstarter. Now, two years on, we hope to crowdfund the same amount again to print a sister title for the Dulwich area, covering East, West, North Dulwich and the Village.

We are former residents of East Dulwich and currently live just 15 minutes away from Lordship Lane, so we know the area well. A number of our contributors live in SE22 and other parts of Dulwich.

We are aware that a number of free magazines are already distributed locally, but we will be the only newspaper unique to the area and we hope we can offer something different. If you'd like to find out more about what we do, please follow this link: http://tinyurl.com/dulwichdiverter

Please feel free to ask us anything you'd like, either on here or by emailing [email protected]. Thanks for reading!

Hello

Great idea and very good luck. I wonder though, would you mind sharing how it works. I don't mean a budget, but, for example, do you pay your contributors, or is it a "community platform" type of thing? Is it a commercial enterprise? Or one of these "new-hybrid-things-they-have-these-days"?

Hi all, thank you for your comments. We're really glad to hear you like the sound of the paper! A huge thanks also to everyone who has contributed their hard-earned cash to the crowdfunding campaign so far. We've raised over ?800 since 8pm last night, which is way beyond our hopes and expectations!

Bawdy-nan, thank you for your question. The concept behind the Dulwich paper is the same as The Peckham Peculiar, in that everyone who works on it does so in their spare time. We believe in paying all our regular contributors for their efforts, be it journalists, designers or photographers.

Paying all our staff costs a fair bit of money and thanks to the advertising support we have, we essentially break even each issue. As a result, in order to launch a new paper we'll need to raise the initial cash to fund the start-up costs, which is why we've launched the Kickstarter campaign.

If you'd like more of an idea of the type of stories we cover, you can check out the back issues of the PP here: http://issuu.com/peckhampeculiar We envisage that if we do manage to print The Dulwich Diverter, it will be very similar in the style of content.

Let us know if you have any more questions!

Always wondered if the Peculiar would expand to Dulwich, either as a extension of the current paper or as a stand-alone title.

Good to see that you're attempting to go for the latter. The niche editorial format of the current paper should go down well here, leaving the SLP and Southwark News to do what they do best.

Hi everyone,

Thanks again for the lovely comments - it's genuinely appreciated!

Our crowdfunding campaign is only three days old but we've already raised nearly half the money we need so we're thrilled.

And particularly because almost a quarter of what has been contributed has come via the East Dulwich Forum!

A huge thank you to all of our 67 backers so far!

Earlier this morning, just 4.5 days after the campaign started, we hit our minimum target of ?5,000! Our running total currently stands at ?5,445 so we?re absolutely thrilled at the response.

We?ve still got 54 days to go so any further money we raise, we will invest into increased circulation and/or helping produce future editions, and keeping the project alive throughout 2016 and beyond. We will then rely purely on advertising revenue to keep printing.

Thanks again,

Mark and Kate and all at The Dulwich Diverter

    • What would I do about cyclists?  The failed Tory manfesto commitment to train all kids was an excellent proposal.  Public information campaigns aimed at all road users, rather than singling some out, to more considerately share the road, as TfL have done, is welcome too. As for crunching vehicles.  I'd extend this to illegal ebikes, illegal e-scoooters (I think some local authorities have done this with the latter) but before that I would (a) legislate that the delivery companies move away from zero hours contracts to permanent employees and take responsibility for their training, vehicles and behaviour on the road.   More expensive takeaways are a price worth paying for safer roads and proper terms and conditions (b) legislate to register all illegal e-bikes and scooters so that when they are found on the road the retailer takes a hit, and clamp down on any grey markets.  If you buy an e scooter say from Halfords this comes with a disclaimer that it can only be used on private land with the owner's permission.
    • I know a lot of experts in the field and getting a franchise was a license to print money, that is why Virgin were so happy to spend lots of dosh challenging government ten years ago when they lost the West Coast franchise.  This will not be overnight, rather than when the franchise has come to the end. Government had previously taking over the operator of last resort when some TOCs screwed up. Good, at last some clear blue water between the parties.  Tories said they were going to do a halfway house, but I've not noticed.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_British_Railways   : "On 19 October 2022, Transport Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan announced that the Transport Bill which would have set up GBR would not go ahead in the current parliamentary session.[15] In February 2023, Transport Secretary Mark Harper re-affirmed the government's commitment to GBR and rail reform.[16] The 2023 King's speech announced the progression of a draft Rail Reform Bill which would enable the establishment of GBR, although it has not been timetabled in the Parliamentary programme.[5] The Transport Secretary Mark Harper later told the Transport Select Committee that the legislation was unlikely to reach Royal Assent within the 2023-2024 parliamentary session.[17]"
    • Can't help thinking that regardless of whether Joe wanted to be interviewed, the 'story' that Southwark News wanted to write just got a lot less interesting with 'tyre shop replaced with ... tyre shop'!
    • Labour are proposing to nationalise the railways, (passenger trains but not fright)  Whilst it removes them from shareholders control, and potential profit chasing, is it workable or will it end up costing tax payers more in the long run?  On paper the idea is interesting but does it also need the profitable freight arm included to help reduce fares,?
