Pheasant spotted on Peckham Rye road

Recommended Posts

i couldn't resist. For all who like to drink, lood guck

Pheasant plucker

I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's son

I'm only plucking pheasants 'till the pheasant plucker comes.

My husband is a keeper, he's a very busy man

I try to understand him and I help him all I can,

But sometimes in an evening I feel a trifle dim

All alone, I'm plucking pheasants, when I'd rather pluck with him.

I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's mate

I'm only plucking pheasants 'cos the pheasant plucker's late !

I'm not good at plucking pheasants, at pheasant plucking I get stuck

Though some pheasants find it pleasant I'd rather pluck a duck.

Oh plucking geese is gorgeous, I can pluck a goose with ease

But pheasant plucking's torture because they haven't any grease.

I'm not a pheasant plucker, he has gone out on the tiles

He only plucked one pheasant and I'm sitting here with piles !

You have to pluck them fresh, if it?s fresh they?re not unpleasant,

I knew a man in Dunstable who could pluck a frozen pheasant.

They say the village constable had pheasant plucking sessions

With the vicar on a Sunday ?tween the first and second lessons.

I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's mum

I'm only plucking pheasants 'till the pheasant plucker's come.

My good friend Godfrey is most adept, he's really got the knack

He likes to have a pheasant plucked before he hits the sack.

I like to give a helping hand, I gather up the feathers,

It's really all our pheasant plucking keeps us pair together.

I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's friend

I'm only plucking pheasants as a means unto an end !

My husband's in the forest always banging with his gun

If he could hear me half the time I'm sure that he would run,

For there's fluff in all my crannies, there's feathers up my nose

And I'm itching in the kitchen from my head down to my toes.

I'm not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's wife

And when we pluck together it's a pheasant plucking life !

Pheasants don't ordinarily congregate in urban locations, so I fear the poor things have been dumped here by someone. The best thing you can do is contact the RSPCA, who hopefully will collect them and put them back into a more suitable place.

I have photographed and posted elsewhere the fully grown male pheasant often seen around East side of Peckham Rye near Rye Hill. He appears to have a broken wing and is often seen strolling around the manor with a friendly crow. I alerted a wildlife charity but they have not replied, so may have to remind them. It's sad that he can't fly. But he's a big so and so, yet even so the foxes could have a good meal if they were strategic enough. Not seen any grouse feathers around so it would yet appear he is still around.

I phones the RSPB and they said there are often reports of pheasant sightings in London.

They agreed it's not a good environment but moving them wouldn't necessarily be any better - there are also two so they would both have to be caught.

They may have come from allotments and got out.

They do fly, but not far.

They said hope for the best.

I hope they find each other and go to somewhere safe, away from buses.

That sounds like a children's book, maybe waiting to be written. The first library book I borrowed, called Hoggie and Bear, featured an even more odd couple.

I saw the (Male) Pheasant on the Rye yesterday. Quite taken by the image!

It reminded me that in 1967 (or there a-bouts) Jimmy Hendrix released a pair of green parakeets in Carnaby st. I like to think, all the parakeets in London could have come from this couple.

Maybe the latest local Guitar hero has made a similar manoeuvre.

    • I'm basing it on 20+ years cycling in London and seeing the absolute biggest rule-breakers being my fellow cyclists. I once stopped at a zebra crossing to let a man cross and a cyclist behind me called me a putain for stopping.  I've even witnessed a grown man aggressively ringing his bell and swearing at a four year old child for not getting out of his way.... on a footpath.... in Burgess Park.  I genuinely cannot remember the last time a cyclist stopped for me at a pedestrian crossing.  They give the rest of us cyclists and bad name and turn the traffic against us.
    • Sorry to hear and glad you and hopefully bike OK and doesn't put you off cycling. Please do inform the police even if that sounds a waste of time.  Do consider going to the Motor Insurance Bureau, the slush fund set up by insurers for untraced/uninsured motorists.

    • Hi, Did any one manage to get the license number of the the white van that knocked me off my bike.   He was making an illegal left turn from Matham Grove, a one way street into East Dulwich Grove.  I had my hand up to indicate I was there but he ran me over anyway.  As I was lying on the road under my bike I noticed people had witnessed what had occurred and wondered if anyone has the registeration plate of the vehicle.   Thanks to those who helped me. Please message me here if you have that information or any videos of the event.  I would be grateful.  Relatively unharmed, bruised leg, twisted knee, sore shoulder. However, I need my bike to be looked at to check it is in good working order and road worthy. Sam
