" Has Blackbird Bakery closed down, no it bloo*y hasn't!"

Recommended Posts

Passed it yesterday and it looked like it had.

I did always think it wasn't in the right location there for the kind of thing it was selling, but sory if it has closed nevertheless.

Don't panic, it hasn't closed down - they're simply moving to bigger and better premises where the furniture shop used to be. It seems that the bakery has been a great success since it opened and they're going to capitalise on this. I understand that they're going to expand cafe as part of the move.

Excellent, I'm really pleased to hear it.

So clearly I'm no judge whatsoever of a good location :))

Glad to hear it's not shutting down, as when I saw the "shop for let" sign that's what I assumed. The list with the days' speciality breads is still there. A cafe sounds great - but I hope they have similar opening hours to Neros. I think it's nice if cafes stay open a bit later, till 7.30pm or so, no? A decent cafe would be a welcome addition to the Grove Vale area, which I think is great and underrated.

new shop just a couple of doors along from the old shop - in what was the furniture place, that was called Shaws or something like that! Didn't make it along there today as I thought it wasn't opening for another week or so - doh!

Glad to hear new one is now open and look forward to checking it out. They have a related website is http:www/4andtwenty.co.uk (as in 4 and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie, I presume) :) where you can order their cakes, tarts & pies, if not the bread. The Herne Hill branch of Blackbird gave me the web details. The bakery itself is in Herne Hill too.

Their bread is fab - my only request - Blackbird please bake me a bagel! (boiled first, then baked). Please petty Blackbird - so I don't need to keep schlepping to north london to get them! My fave bagels - Ronis in West End Lane, West Hampstead. Lets see what Herne Hill/Dulwich can do!

The problem with the Blackbird bakery is that they simply do not have sufficient bread/sandwiches available and I have noted that recently some of their cakes have not been fresh either (I had a piece of carrot cake which was not as good as it used to be) I have raised the issue of shortage of bread with them several times but they don't seem to be interested. I was there the other day at around 1pm and they had virtually run out of bread and only had a few Brie or Avocado sandwiches left. As I was sitting there several people came into the shop to look for bread and left empty handed! Very strange way to run a business.

I don't know. If they can sell all they produce and make a profit why risk making more and having stock left over? They do have another outlet - it may be a capacity issue at the bakery - perhaps there's a limit to the amount of good loaves of bread they can make in a day?

I'd prefer a small run of excellent quality to a longer run of poorer quality.

Selling out of bread is a sign of an excellent business that makes everything fresh daily. If they can sell everything they make and make a profit why would they risk making more for it to go to waste? I applaud any business that makes everything daily and doesnt have too much wasteage! I also think their new shop looks great - congrats blackbird bakery - its nice to see them doing well. And I will continue to get there in the morning to make sure I get my daily bread - I have rung up and reserved bread a few times and theyre quite happy to put one aside for you if you cant get there until the afternoon.

oooh yes, I did err with the web address. well spotted Bony Fido!

Re running out of bread - yes I agree that it can be annoying. good to hear that you can reserve and pick up later. yes is also a sign of good produce. is also a factor that the bakery itself is not on the premises.

if you go to golders green or brick lane or west end land where the big bagel bakeries are, they tend to have the bakery on site and carry on baking all day and much of the night - thus are able to replenish stock all the time and people come in at all hours - it becomes a whole social/focal community point, a bit like a pub but with bread & bagels in place of beer!

    • I'm basing it on 20+ years cycling in London and seeing the absolute biggest rule-breakers being my fellow cyclists. I once stopped at a zebra crossing to let a man cross and a cyclist behind me called me a putain for stopping.  I've even witnessed a grown man aggressively ringing his bell and swearing at a four year old child for not getting out of his way.... on a footpath.... in Burgess Park.  I genuinely cannot remember the last time a cyclist stopped for me at a pedestrian crossing.  They give the rest of us cyclists and bad name and turn the traffic against us.
    • Sorry to hear and glad you and hopefully bike OK and doesn't put you off cycling. Please do inform the police even if that sounds a waste of time.  Do consider going to the Motor Insurance Bureau, the slush fund set up by insurers for untraced/uninsured motorists.

    • Hi, Did any one manage to get the license number of the the white van that knocked me off my bike.   He was making an illegal left turn from Matham Grove, a one way street into East Dulwich Grove.  I had my hand up to indicate I was there but he ran me over anyway.  As I was lying on the road under my bike I noticed people had witnessed what had occurred and wondered if anyone has the registeration plate of the vehicle.   Thanks to those who helped me. Please message me here if you have that information or any videos of the event.  I would be grateful.  Relatively unharmed, bruised leg, twisted knee, sore shoulder. However, I need my bike to be looked at to check it is in good working order and road worthy. Sam
