This is my word of the month, HB.

Well done for dropping it into a thread with such wild abandon and double points as it's in a sentence alongside a triple 'Barry'.

I thought you were starting to lose your form - I see how wrong I was and for that I am thankful.

Bossman, despite its appalling name - for a great range of real ales, and yes, Stella at a fiver for six - the Greek deli also does it, but further for me to carry it home :))

Edited to change it's to its - OMG I'm slipping, how did that happen :))

I've only been into Boss Man a couple of times but to have found them friendly and like their selection of imported beer (I have an unstoppable urge to buy and try new beers when I see them).....but I'm new here so what do I know ;)

Will have to check out Barry Off License sometime too, haven't ventured down that end of Barry rd much as yet.

Bossman for prog beers with scarecrows and such on the label like 'Circle Master'.

Barry Road offie for a 6 for ?5 'bag of shame' deal.

24hr Offie next to Peckham Rye for 6am Marlboro and another 6 Red Stripes which will be your downfall later that day...

I was very dubious of the bossman when he opened, now i think he's great for when the Majestic stash is drained dry. Just round the corner, good selection of workaday reds, not bad for ales, cheap bbq lager for the weekend. What more do you want? There are plenty of other places to get the posh stuff when your father-in-law is coming.

  • 4 weeks later...

For those of you who have mentioned Nicholas as a place to buy something special, I would be interested to hear why you prefer them to Green & Blue. I ask only because it is always interesting to get feedback to see what we can do to improve our service. I am certainly not knocking Nicholas, who do a great job, but was more wondering just out of interest - we may well learn something that helps us run a better shop!

I'm not asking the same question of Bossman just because we don't really try and compete with them as they do more beer etc than we can.

Any thoughts or comments gratefully received though if this takes the subject off topic i don't want to make Admin cross, so feel free to PM me if necessary!

re G&B... whether it's true or not, I've always had the perception that it's a notch above Nicholas price-wise, so I might go into Nicholas instead for that reason.

And although I know it's a complete cop-out... for those of us who don't know much about wine, it can seem a little intimidating buying wine from a shop who specialise in small producers who you've almost certainly never heard of before.

I find the opposite. I buy from Green and Blue because I don?t know much about wine. The staff/owners as well informed, the wines are well described and (because I suspect they are quite selective on what they put on the shelves) I have not yet been disappointed by any of their wines.

    • That's a good idea smiley blue , if you or anyone else comes across petitions to end these despicable acts of cruelty to defenceless animals please put on here or start a new thread if you please so we can sign the petition and add our objections to this , I would also like to thank all of you the people for reading these messages and adding your voices to this cruelty,  maybe we can end it
    • Malumbu, by that measure are police efforts to cut down on anti-social driving by issuing tickets and fines a token effort as well? Surely punitive measures for cyclists breaking the rules will encourage them not to break the rules again? A bit like when you got stopped and taken into the cab of an HGV. The police are currently using that tactic to show those who break the rules cycling that it might lead them to being hit by a lorry due to the driver's having limited vision - the cycling equivalent of a speed awareness course for drivers.    When they stopped you was it because you had broken a rule or was it just more of an education programme and they asked you to take a look and did it change your cycling behaviour in any way? As I said previously there are those who break the rules on cycling out of ignorance (and those out of arrogance) and I am sure they are using HGVs to educate those in the ignorance category and then hitting those in the arrogance category with the PCNs.
    • Good that PETA is on it but can we add our voices to the fight against this horrible practice? I’m still shocked! A petition maybe? Happy to raise to the RSPCA but don’t want to duplicate efforts. I’ve signed campaigns from RSPCA before which sends it directly to your councillor
    • Yes, I'm aware of that. I believe the brood was five to begin with. However they are almost adult size now so not the prey of rats any longer.
