recommendations for a sexy eatery nearby for a birthday lunch

Recommended Posts

Any recommendations for a sexy eatery nearby for a birthday lunch? Can be ED, Nunhead, Forest Hill, you know somewhere close to home.

Oh, not (another) Indian please! Tandoori Nights is my prefence and is not really my choice for a frivolous birthday lunch for 2 :)

Back room at the Palmerston, Franklins or Le Chardon....also Number 22 in Herne Hill is fantastic - it can be dead inside for lunch but see if you can book a table at their little garden in the back - I had a very romantic meal there just recently!

Back room of the Palmerston, I'd say.

Le Chardon too risky, Franklin's great food but not much atmosphere.

Edited to say: and the Herne is out of favour since they f****d up my sixtieth and were rude about it. If you go there, treble check your booking and if they make a mistake, don't you make the mistake of pointing it out.

Well the debate in my head goes on...

Le Chardon, been loads and mostly for lunch so wouldn't be anything special for a birthday lunch!

Franklins, love it, but never been for lunch and it IS a Tuesday so probably will be rather quiet (but then on a Tuesday where wouldn't...).

Palmerston, well my man works in a fab gastropub in Chelsea and I don't think he would be charmed if I took him to "work" in a weird kinda way. Especially if it is not as good, no insult to Palmerston as I do think it's a great pub!

I love Barcelona, but as you say DavidC, not the most romantic of places!

Mmmm, now Beauberry House, mixed reviews here and I am rather interested. However, frigid is not a word that makes me think romantic and sexy...

Number 22 in Herne Hill, don't know it so may have to do a little research

Locale is my local, if it wasn't it would be the one that I would choose...

Chez Bruce tops my list but I really wanted something walking distance...

Was going to give Biagio La Lanterna a try but they are closed for reburb!

If I have to travel that distance there are so many choices, Le Poulet Pot for french, Bibendum for seafood, La Famiglia for Italian, and that's just a handful around Chelesa. There is Farringdon/ Spitalfields, West End, etc. all just a short bus ride.

Maybe I am being too fussy but what the hell, now if Moxons had a restaurant attached I would go just so that I could pig out on seafood... Thanks all for your help!!!

Will let you know how this story ends ;-)

p.s. Still open to suggestion...

Cant believe that nobody has mentioned the Rosendale!!!

Great food, good atmosphere, fantastic service.

We don't bother with Palmerston or Franklins for a good meal locally, we go straight for the Rosendale these days.

Other alternatives in Clapham and Balham (bit further afield I know but worth the trip) - Lamberts is a super place for lunch at the weekend, Chez Bruce is fantastic but pricey, Tsunami in Clapham North is amazing (although perhaps better for dinner).

Have also heard good things about Upstairs in Brixton.

Another fun and sexy place for lunch is the Prince Regent in Herne Hill. The sexy thing about it is getting a booth and they are always sexy as nobody looks to see the footsie going on ;-)

Chez Bruce gets my vote! (tu) Great service, great food and last time I went there (last month) for my birthday it seemed quite reasonable ?25 for lunch!

I would steer clear of Le Chardon, unless you want poor & rude service on your birthday! ;-)

If you're thinking of getting in the car (cab) to Chez Bruce, we just had a fab birthday meal at the new-ish Conran restaurant in Shoreditch - The Boundary. Quicker to get to than Wandsworth (about 20mins in a cab). Very romantic, beautifully designed space, attentive staff, tip top grub (traditional French, with proper hors d'oeuvres and cheese carts and everything and lovely things like chocolate dipped crystallised orange petit fours). Also very glamorous bar with classic cocktail list. To make a really romantic date of it, you could start at the rooftop bar (we couldn't get in when we went, it was full at 8.30pm but lunch prob easier) - think that's also a restaurant, but not sure you can book tables being outdoor. Have to say, if it's something special, I would go further afield than ED, in my experience all the places mentioned in this list have been both hits and misses (eg had lovely food at the Herne, but also fantastic rudeness from landlord; super service at Rosendale as well as meal-spoilingly bad); Palmerston bit less variable quality, but def not sexy, nor Chardon (too cafe-like). Another pretty sexy place is Eyre Brothers in Hoxton, added bonus is a fab cocktail bar/club across the road, Home I think it's called? Anyway, have fun - let us know how it goes!

    • Plenty for sale online from various ticket vendors but you'll need to part with £250 and upwards by the looks of it. Out of interest i kept an eye on the prices for the England and Italy Euro final. At one point they were on offer for a couple of grand each. On the day sellers were obviously getting itchy feet and prices dropped somewhat but never went any lower than £400. That was a few hours before kick off. There was plenty still available half an hour before kick off.   Having been to Wembley a couple of times for play off finals i found it to be not a great place to watch football. Sat three rows back from the pitch side advertising hoardings for one game and way way up in the gods for the other. We felt to far away from the pitch on both occasions. Up in the goods was just stupid because we felt cut off as well.  I don't think it was rebuilt with acoustics in mind either. Even with most of our 25k fans singing it never sounded loud because it's pretty much uncovered and too open.   Happy hunting!
    • It doesn't work as a commercial venture.  Bit churlish to say I told you so.  I told you so.  I'll send less greetings cards.  What pees me off is international postage where you can no longer send light letters at 10 grammes, normal ones up to 20g, now all at the much more expensive 100 g  Didn't we vote to take back control and price everything according to irrational units like ounces? That's some obscure humour btw
    • Available from Monday April 8th 2024, 2on2Walkies take pride in doggie care and only walk 2 furry friends at a time. I make sure that they get plenty of doggie interaction and socialisation in the park as well as making friends. Back home happy and tired I always check that the water bowl has fresh water and always make sure the doggie is left comfortable before I leave. I'm fully insured and have a couple of slots available for local walks to either Peckham Rye Park or Dulwich Park.  Thank you!
    • Why would they only send them recorded delivery? I used the signed for option yesterday.
