Robberies in Dulwich/East Dulwich

Recommended Posts

Just a quick message to raise awareness in the area. Over the last 2 months I have witnessed two separate robberies. The first was last month on the outskirts of Dulwich Park (Dulwich Common Side). A lady was approached and attacked by 1 white & 2 black female youths whilst walking through the park (Around 9pm). The victim managed to make her way out of the park, after being assaulted/eggs thrown at her. On this occasion the attackers unsuccessfully attempted to steal the victims bag.

The second incident happened around 1230pm today (07/06/10) outside the Chicken Shop (Across from The Vale pub, East Dulwich). A young female had her bag taken by two black male youths on bicycles. The males were very persistent and did not leave until they had the victims bag.

Police were notified on both occasions.

I'm not knocking your post or the seriousness of these crimes, they sound very scary, but I just want to point out that it can happen everywhere and anywhere so any new comers don't be scared of East Dulwich. Hope you don't mind me posting that katkincoop.

I don't mind at all. East Dulwich/Dulwich is a great place to live and I generally feel very safe but it's very easy to become complacent when it comes to personal safety. At least if you are aware of the facts you can make your own judgements :-)

I agree that it's easy to become complacent, however i'm not sure what you can do to stop this sort of thing happening?

I guess not carry valuables around with you and then if your bag gets snapped, you don't put up a fight and it doesn't matter as much???

But this sort of petty crime is part of living in london and to be honest isn't that shocking to me personally. Or is that just me? It's violent crime that scares me.. knives etc and that happens in the richest / smartest parts of london cos that's where rich people live..... e.g. my rich boss was held up at gun point in the hallway of her house in primrose hill, whilst carrying her 5month old baby in broad daylight.

We should probably expect these incidents to rise slightly in light of the economic troubles and high unemployment

edit: to clarify i meant to say violent crime happens in both rich and more challenging areas (obv not just rich!)

In a filthy cess pit such as London, teeming with the shady undercurrents of a society gone horibly wrong, such incidents are inevitable.

?300,000 to buy a crappy 2 bed flat, and you still need to watch your back every time you leave the house. Say's it all.

Can't imagine why we don't all go and live somewhere peaceful, like the Lake District... oh, maybe c**p happens wherever you are ...

The truth hurts some people, esp those who doggedly hold on to the fantasy that paying 300k for a 2 bed flat in a street / area of town in which muggings are a real danger was a good idea.

Jah Lush says:

"stop boring us with your drivel.".. the same could be said to pretty much every poster on this forum!

Where in the UK is not a cess pit? Probably most places that aren't in London to be honest, Hull and Liverpool the exception.

Take a look around you. It's nice out and the natives are friendly.

Wasn't eater81 being satirical, albeit applying the satire in much the same plentiful and heavy-handed fashion as a brickie applies his muck to a run of bricks?

I think it's OK to mention these things, the implication by R&A that these weren't violent crimes is daft, or is it just me?

The criminals were not requesting the possesions of the people in question, there was an implicit, if not overt threat of violence, which makes it a violent crime by my reckoning.

Both victims female. Cowards selecting soft targets.

Katcincoop, thanks for the post.

I'm sorry you're still renting, but there's no need to take your frustrations out on the homeowners.

Ah, perhaps Eater81 wasn't being satirical after all.

After due consideration, I think perhaps I'll get my coat.

But the OP's point and warning still is a good one.

yes i think you're right i.e there is a threat of violence.

So therefore that is really intent

However, I guess i was responding to the post 'people may get scared moving to ED' and saying that 'no, they wont if they hear about a few bag snatchings...' i think that's what i was getting at.

I think there's a scale of crime and when it involves a weapon, then that is serious. Whereas I personally wouldn't hold a bag snatcher as overly serious.

Give it to us straight from the shoulder eater81 no need to pretty it up we want your best shot.....

I agree with you there are cess pit areas in London and some of the pits are not far from here, but the most important are the people. If you have thieves and hooligans aplenty you have to watch your back, the fact is you only need one which we have seen in one of the cleanest, free from the cess pits in cumbria, one man two guns and an attitude and the result is 12 dead innocent people.

I loathe theft in any form and I hope the scumbags perpetrating the recent crimes are caught and paid out in full,

they usually are eventually, and this forum has been an asset to the local police,

and the more people like you tell it how it is and include the most accurate descriptions of these thieving low lifes, the better off we will all be. Some cranky forumista's complain but the majority think accurate descriptions including race and colour are advantageous to the cause.

With regard to the 300k for a broken down stable or shed in the middle of scumtown, that is the price you pay for living in an area where you are most likely to earn a reasonable living, and hopefully to finally buy ones own with consistency of earning year on year.

Nobody is holding a gun to your head to stay here, you can leave and move into a crack house area in Manchester Liverpool or Glasgow cheaply enough but the facts are you cannot earn as consistently and you do not get the option of potential earnings as you do here.

:)) you made me laugh out loud with your brilliant description eater81, full marks!

I live in London and love it, I also accept the fact that crime is rife as it has been for the past 400 years. I'm also a Manc and can vouch that it's as bad in fact you feel more threatened but they don't live on top of as they do down here.

One issue is on earnings, that really is tosh as it's eaten up by living costs.

Crime is fact of life in the cities and towns in the uk and will no doubt seem worse as population density gets more intense. However if society spells out what behaviuor is acceptable and what isn't then themorale highground will always count!

I doubt that anyone would give ED a swerve on the basis of a couple of muggings.

Bur muggings they were. I think any robbery is serious for the victim, a little empathy please.

And what ranks highest on your crime scale?

A punch or punches can potentially cause as much damage as a baseball bat, a knife can be more deadly than a gun.

A snatched bag can have an appalling effect on a senior citizen, it can rob them of more than possessions, their self-confidence and independence can be taken as well.

Next you'll be telling us domestic burglary is nothing more than a crime against property.

Pah!

Sunday afternoon VW Golf was seen driving down Lordship lane with 2 flat tyres and the front bonnet open, first thought crazy driver and very dangerous, looking to be stop by the Police. 5 minutes before that he attempted to kill a cyclist by ramming his car at him just past the Library , that?s why his bonnet was sticking up he didn?t want to stop whilst making his getaway, apparently the Police was looking for him for another incident the previous day. The cyclist threw himself over a parked car to avoid been run over, he was bruise and very shaken. Cyclist gets kill all over the country some by accident and others ROAD RAGE.

In Colchester 30 years ago, you'd get the shit kicked out of you for crimes like wearing sunglasses. Proper violence; stupid and dumb. That's why I moved to London where at least there seems to be a motive now and again.

    • It doesn't work as a commercial venture.  Bit churlish to say I told you so.  I told you so.  I'll send less greetings cards.  What pees me off is international postage where you can no longer send light letters at 10 grammes, normal ones up to 20g, now all at the much more expensive 100 g  Didn't we vote to take back control and price everything according to irrational units like ounces? That's some obscure humour btw

I make sure that they get plenty of doggie interaction and socialisation in the park as well as making friends. Back home happy and tired I always check that the water bowl has fresh water and always make sure the doggie is left comfortable before I leave. I'm fully insured and have a couple of slots available for local walks to either Peckham Rye Park or Dulwich Park.  Thank you!
