Recommended Posts

Recently, due to financial cuts the council have taken away funding for this beautiful, historic sports and social club, it is now run and staffed completely by volunteers. We do everything ourselves from green-keeping to hosting all day music and corporate events. We have a real hidden gem, even lifelong Dulwich folk are amazed when they set eyes on our beautiful venue. And it's available to hire at very reasonable rates. Southwark Sports Bowls & Social Club can offer you: Surroundings straight out of the Caribbean! With white wooden huts and palm trees surrounding a lawn bowls green and amenity area for parties, weddings and photo opportunities, in a completely private, secluded setting.

A Clubhouse with cheap bar, seating for 150, brand new kitchen & toilets, stage, house DJ, house band.

We can provide you with everything for your party, wedding or corporate event.....from cakes, catering to cocktails.

And you are supporting a valuable social asset for your community.

Hi Tracymcdavis, we open the green and bar at 5pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays games usually get going around 5:30 but you

come later and just join in. We would be closing up at around 8:30 - 9pm or until the nights draw in.

While members can play at days/times to suit themselves, by prior arrangement.

The first roll up of the season will be next Thursday 24th April.

Please feel free to come along.

And to anyone else reading this. All are welcome 12-90 years and beyond!

Hi, mancity68

A Good question. We play lawn (flat) bowls here in the South, while you will find lawn green bowls all over the British Isles, 'Crown Green' is only played in the North of England. Well from the Midlands up, to be precise.

The skills and aims of the game are the same. If you want to try flat to see if you would enjoy it, we would be be more than happy to welcome you aboard.

For those who want to know the difference: lawn (flat) bowls is played on a flat green using up to four woods (balls)

and is played within the confined marked area known as a rink. The jack is much smaller than the woods and rolls true (doesn't have a bias) unlike the woods themselves.

I'm no expert but I believe in Crown Green bowls the lawn has a slight raise in the middle, only two woods are used and the jack is slightly larger and has a bias too. The game can be played all across the green, in any direction.
