Whatever 2nd pram you get, check how easily you can fold it down i.e. if you go to a restaurant and have to prop it up in a corner or under a table. Does it go in the boot of your car?. We ended up having 2 buggies - one of which was too long to go into a car boot and impossible to fold down single handed but was very sturdy for walking around and hanging shopping bags from the handles. We had a smaller light weight buggy (a MacLaren) which we took on holidays, days out and eating out.

> when we last had a meeting for Belvoir road area
> with tessa jowell I did bring this point up and
> said could we maybe have yellow line painted round
> each corner to stop this happening ?

The trouble with yellow lines is they restrict the amount of parking space available and that's just not something councils are prepared to do. Not least because of the paperwork involved (as things stand, I believe it would require a separate consultation for each junction).

The Highway Code, in a spurt of Tufty-era optimism, does recommend drivers don't park within 30 feet of a junction, but that has no legal status, and as far as I know, yellow lines round corners have never attempted such a distance, 2 or 3 feet being about normal. Such lines are rare in any case, because it's already an offence to park in front of a pedestrian-access dropped-kerb and they're about that width in any case.

The only thing that could help is if our elected representatives at Westminster did something about it the next time the Road Traffic Act needs amending. But if the past forty years are anything to go by, they won't. John Peyton, in the early '70s, seems to be the last minister to attempt anything of the sort, pledging a ban on vehicles from parking within 20 yards of a junction. This, apparently, caused so much 'hardship' to tradesfolk before it was enforced, that it was amended to nothing swiftly after. I don't see any good reason why a minister of our enlightened times wouldn't duck the same issue similarly.

> The council and police also tessa jowell have all

If, as I think, Ryedale is in a 20mph zone, then you'll have no luck. That's because 20mph zones are self-enforcing. Currently, the self-enforcement comes in the form of humps and cushions, though Southwark is leading attempts to relax the regulations and allow them to be self-enforcing by willpower alone (item 2, here).

Of course, what Southwark puts on it's website isn't the whole story, and a slightly fuller guide to their thinking is on the Local Government Association' site (here)

From that, you might imagine that the Police might play a role of some sort. But comments from the Met in Tessa Jowell's patch (here) make it very clear what Plod's response might be to any consultation.

In other words, the current situation is as good, and probably better, than we'll ever get. But that's politics for you.

I've used this nursery (forest hill road) for several years and have mixed feelings. Staff - brilliant. Owners - dubious. Thet have not gone bust but was probably a close run thing as they failed 4 ofsteds in a row and were temporarily withdrawn form the list the council give out due to this. Now MUCH better, but believe due to the fact that manager is lovely and patient and persistent, plus southwark early years did loads of work with them... owners good at agreeing but slow on actions. I've sent mine there for baby room only, moved after age two. This only applies to Excel NOT excel II. Good luck with your decision. Unfortunatley alibo is right £215 is very cheap for area.
PS on costs check out childcare vouchers for yourself and partner. If your workplace supports them you can save £160-£200/month (this is a salalry sacrifice scheme, not benefits)

it's mad...I suspect it just reflects the quality and small number of flats available in the village...small sample innit. It just shows how much SE22 is punching above its weight for pretty average housing stock. I live here, I like it but the prices are madness for pretty small victorian terraces built for railway workers and junior clerks not that well connected. 15 years ago it was a real bargain area but now......bleedin' madness.

The rumours were true for us too... also costs more than you probably think too. My best recommendation is ofr the Villa on Lyndhurst in SE15. My two elder daughters have been there and the youngest is due to start soon, however they only take children from two. Babies age range is very poorly covered in the area so depending on your own preference sign to nurseries now, find a nanny/share or look for a child minder closer to the time
Most importantly, good luck. And look araound several places because if you're like I was, I had no idea what I was looking for. It takes practice
Regarding costs, check of you/partner are eligible through work for 'childcare vouchers' which mean you pay for upto £243(?)/month pre-tax that gets apid to Ofsted registered childcarers. Standard rate tax payers save approx £80/month, higher rate approx £100/month. If both of you then upto £200/month saved. Also at age 3 they get 5 free 2.5 hours so also will decrease the bills later on xx

[The Lounge] Torture

When will this damn torture ever end? All of my constructs are being torn apart (wail)!

First I find out that my damn ugly eco Prius is not so pious afterall, and despite my humiliation at driving the vile egg box styled contraption around Dulwich on a regular basis, it turns out that it could be little more than a death trap. Who cares about the penguins when my progeny could be at risk?

Then this evening I discover that the poppets of Alleyn's have been trampled into the ground in a maths challenge by the children at The Charter!!!

How VERY dare they?

I demand some answers, and for Gods sake, where do I get a refund (blows nose loudly)?
