Legally of course it's 18+ versus under 18, though the criminal justice system - and other parts of the law - have often in the past used 21 as the cut off (e.g. youth custody vs. adult prison). Have we somehow drifted over the years from 21 to 18 then 16 as the marker of adulthood? Is this sensible?

I don't think it's solely responsible but I do believe it makes a big contribution to the problem. People consume a huge amount of violence via films, TV, games, music etc these days, and the more you're exposed to it, the less sensitised you become. Extended, lingering, close-up violence is now mainstream stuff, and you only have to think about some recent films you've seen to realise how much they've had to up the dose to deliver the same hit. And it's not portrayed realistically enough for kids to understand the consequences: apparently kids who've been shot in gang fights often say they didn't know it would hurt - because in video games and films people just fall down.

Would also argue that audiences tend to identify with the source of power - you may be familiar with the feminist theory that women watching westerns 'surprisingly' identified with the cowboys rather than the token and usually powerless female characters - so in this case they're absorbing an understanding that violence means you're powerful/brave/funny/sexy.

Sorry if I appear to be ranting. Even Prince Caspian - apparently suitable for all ages - contained levels of violence I'm sure I'd have been frightened by when I was small.

Hi All,

Due to an immenent relocation of my office to a much cooler room in the house (It hit 33 degrees in the loft today!) I have for sale my "Air conditioning unit" Essentially you stock it up with water, and this drips through the fan's airstream, and cools the air in the room. OK, not as cooling as pure air conditioning, but then again, you won't get pure aircon for £20, which is what I want for this.

Image of it (Boxed, as it lives in the box when not used) is attached.
> Dear East Dulwichites,
>
> I have a mountain of old photos in boxes and heaps
> on the computer since we all went digital.

Cathie,

Two points to make here.

1) The scanning and captioning of your prints is going to take the most time, hence be the most costly. Being realistic, it's unlikely you could scan in, and caption more than 30 shots per hour, and that's likely to cost you about £10 an hour at least.

2) If you're writing captions on the back of the images to then give to someone, why not just get the whole lot printed, and stick them in an album, and caption them yourself? You'll be doing the same amount of writing...

Good luck..
Then HonaloochieB+ takes his place on the see-saw. HonaloochieB squares his manly shoulders, and Honaloochieb and Honaloochiebeta assist HonaloochieBeJaysus to a standing position atop the aforementioned manly shoulders.
He braces himself and takes a leap toward the raised end of the see-saw.
With immaculate timing HonaloochieB+ steps off the see-saw just before HonaloochieBeJaysus arrives at the other end.
The crack of breaking bone is audible around the arena. HonaloochieB+ is doubled up with mirth. HonaloochieBeJasus is is screaming with pain.
Clowns come on with a stretcher to take a way the injured acrobat. He leaves the ring bellowing threats and empracations at his nephew.
At one of the ring side seats a little girl is heard to ask "Mummy, what's a c*nt's trick?"
-------------------------------------------------------
> Hi,
>
> Just a quickie to make you aware that the
> following businesses that have had incidents, so
> you may want to use cash as an alternative.
>
> Texaco Garage - Grove Vale, East Dulwich
> Budgens Convenience Store - Lordship Lane, East
> Dulwich
> Costcutter/Jet Service Station - East Dulwich
> Road, East Dulwich
> Tesco's (Metro outlet) - East Dulwich Road, East
> Dulwich
>
> The way that some fraudsters obtain your pin
> number is by using a remote camera, they place it
> above the keyboard and read. When they start to get
> noticed the retrieve the camera and move on to the
> next hole in the wall. A simple tip is that if
> you sight anyone sitting in a car/van facing the
> machine, then do not use that machine. Always look
> above the keyboard for the camera, but do not
> remove it as they might get annoyed!
> A remote camera needs a clear signal view and
> needs no more that 25 yards to obtain good
> recordable footage.
>
> If you have had a problem and want to change
> banks, I would suggest the coop bank, they rang me
> at 23.00 and asked if I was in India, as
> transactions were tendered over the previous two -
> three hours. They limited my card to UK
> transactions for an hour to allow me to withdraw
> cash, on the understanding that as soon as I had
> withdrawn the money I would call them back to
> advise them. In a couple of day's I had a new
> card and pin number.
>
> Another area that is sus is Peckham, literally all
> machines have been amended at some stage.
>
> Regards,
> Libra Carr.

I was called today by my bank, First Direct to ask if I was in Germany. No I said. Evidently someone used my cloned card to try and withdraw euros. They had the pin number luckily the bank stopped the transaction. I have used all the places you mention above Libra Carr, recently. So my card has been cancelled and I am awaiting the issue of a new one. If they use remote cameras then could we put our hand over the keypad to stop anyone seeing the pin?
