Sweaty Betty - the final nail in the gentrification coffin?

Louisa

Recommended Posts

Just been horrified by reading about this new shop coming to part of the former ED deli unit on LL. A visit to their website shows the kinds of goods they sell, and from this I can only imagine the sort of pram pushing, take away coffee holding, sunglasses wearing yummies this sort of unit will attract. I always knew that deli was a springboard for later post-gentrification chains to move in and take over, and it's come to pass. I am feeling helpless currently. All these years of campaigning for a a fairer mixed ED has come to nothing. I'm tempted to invest in some placards and take to the streets, or contact lidl and get them to stick a metro store next door once Brissi move on! The final nail is indeed in the ED coffin.

Indeed uncleglen. Posh bankers wives with bugger all else to do than shop for goods they'll probably never use. Must feel good walking into 'saw you coming etc' and sneering at people like me ordering a doner & chips next door. Grrr.

Yup 'the more money than' sense thing always really makes sense as a stupid, ignorant generalization ; rich people who earn more money are always more stupid than poorer people who earn less. Before the worthy jump in, I am aware there's some very clever poor people and some very stupid rich people but the premise behind this stupid phrase is fundamentally flawed.

Louisa is this 15th or 16th Last nail in the ED coffin? I'm losing count

LOL if you think proper bankers are in SE22 in any real numbers - where's the sneering in SE22, only on the forum in spades from some is where I see it. I suspect you're as nice a s pie to 'them' in real life eh Lou? All this suppressed anger has to get out somewhere.

Up-market small chain boutiques are unquestionably now replacing the indepedent gentrifying businesses of the early to mid 00's, in ED. the 'Northcote' effect has materialised, as predicted (and despite of limited space within retail units) by myself and others way back in 2007. As soon as M&S made a move on the lane, other chains (albeit smaller) have/are/will continue to follow suit. I feel for people like myself, but without cars, who are now no longer able to afford to pop to the local shops to get the bare basics. This is a residential area first and foremost and we need useable shops for the whole community where you can grab a pint of milk and a newspaper.

yup there sure are no places where you can grab a pint of milk or a paper on LL (almost too many to count)/Northcross Rd 1. Whatley Road (2 I think); Crystal Palace Road - at least 1; I could go on.......

Serious question Lou - don't you ever get bored of your trolling ever? It's been the same schlep for 9 years....

Maybe they aren't, but just up the road in SE21 I'm sure many bankers have homes, seeing as their are numerous private schools nearby, and guess where they'll go shopping quids? Somewhere on their doorstep perhaps? So not only are these new chain shops aimed at out of town folk (in effect), they're also depriving the SE22 community of a useable high street in a residential neighborhood! I am nice to people if they are nice to me, from experience I've dealt with more anger and confrontation directed at me through pavement rage and day to day ignorance (eg not thanking me for holding a door open in shops etc) from people of this social class than any other. Just my personal observation.

Small boutiques can obviously replace small independents. The space argument concerns large chains, which despite all the hang ringing has not materialised in the area. The units that are large enough for them have chains and the little shops don't. Its always been clear that as the area become richer the small independent shops and boutiques here would likely change to reflect that.

Burro e Salvia replacing Speedo Pizza is a perfect example.

Anyway, no one shopped ad ED Deli (which had a concession in Harrods anyhow). I've enjoyed the pop-ups but now that its leased, I hope the new store does well.

Co-op?

2 Sainburys?

Budgen?

Shop on Barry Road?

I'm sure there are many more.

Am interested in how you've campaigned other than making sniping posts on the Forum.

Don't forget the locksmiths, the vets, dry cleaners, laundrymat, two DIY stores, opticians, etc.

Its ridiculous to say this shop is robbing ED of a useful shop. ED Deli who was there before was barely used, which is why it closed and there are many other places selling similar stuff in the area.

And there in lays the problem quids, you assume I am trolling. Do you honestly believe I would have contributed to the forum for all these years if I were only here to cause a stink about gentrification? You base your current assumptions of me on a handful of posts (barely 20% I would guesstimate) over the entire 9 year period. This troll thing is getting boring.

LM the problem is small independents are being replaced by small chains. It's the classic outcome of this process. This unit started off as a second hand shop, then 'pioneer' gentrifiers came in and opened a delicatessen which was very popular in the early years then started to drop off the radar as the process picked up and wealthier folk moved in. And now we are at the stage where the chain boutique takes over. Yes we have plenty of indepedents still, but for how much longer? Do we really want to end up like Notting Hill in 20 years time? Nowhere to buy a loaf of bread because every commercial unit is a boutique!

I am assuming you didn't notice my spring campaign to prevent daffodils being killed in our local parks? I've had numerous verbal confrontation with bullying pavement hoggers and communal plant killers.

Ah, ED Deli has terrible customer service. Given it had a concession in Harrods, it didn't fail because it wasn't posh enough.

This unit and Foxton's are the only places large enough for a chain on LL that doesn't already have one that I can think of.

I agree the shops around here will increasingly get posher though, which is what it is. I was in Crystal Palace the other day and it reminded me of ED 10 years ago and it was a nice feeling. Ah well, what's past is past.

Ah, there is a couple of news agents, a hairdresser, a cafe and the Great Exhibition Pub. I'm not sure how many more shops a side street needs.

But where's your petition? Can't be a campaigner unless you got a petition.

A Campaign in itself does not need a Petition..

You got me! The places I named are all on the other side of Crystal Palace road where the street changes-- obviously 30 seconds walk from the name changeover but still, not technically there.

Precisely foxy. What is this modern day obsession with online or otherwise petitions? Can one not hold a particular view and express it without being told they are a troll who doesn't have a petition. On the side note of useable chains, it would be nice to have facilities we can all use as a community. I wouldn't have had a problem with pret a manger or space nk coming into this space for example.

    • Did I say that?  I'm not sure why adults cycle on the pavement beyond the odd short cut, for a few metres, and even then walk the bike if there are people on it.  I don't condone unsafe riding.  I don't feel the need to go on about it, feel it gets disproportionate coverage when there are other issues, and that there is a sense that from some "oh the poor motorist"  and "its all those cyclists fault" that the "poor motorist is being victimised". I could post dozens of stories of dangerous driving that have affected me, I see it every day, but don't feel the need, and would of course have to balance this with the fact that most road users happily share space. I've asked some good questions about how you address 'antisocial cycling" but nobody has offered any answers - as this is a forum I'd be keen to understand. The Old Street enforcement is pretty rare and I doubt whether this will make much of a difference unless the police role this out wider.  They wont.  There is no political will.  I've been stopped by the police cycling maybe three times in twenty years, twice to invite me into the cab of a HGV as part of a safer cycling campaign, and once as they were doing security marking.  I've seen plenty of dangerous driving in plain view of police officers, more often than not illegal ebikes and food delivery riders.  Interesting reading a MPS FOI on cycling enforcement, 52 FPN in 5 years for cycling on pavements, therefore either it hardly happens or it is a low priority https://www.met.police.uk/foi-ai/metropolitan-police/d/september-2022/fixed-penalty-notices-issued-cycling-offences-london-january2017-august2022/                       Row Labels 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 Grand Total   Cycling on footway 358 258 297 460 552 174 2099   Pedal cycle - contrave traffic sign   4 74 246 158 66 548   Pedal cycle - contravening automatic traffic signals 2445           2445   Pedal cycle - contravening constable on traffic duty   3   1     4   PEDAL CYCLE - CONTRAVENING DIRECTION GIVEN BY POLICE CONSTABLE / TRAFFIC SURVEY   3 1 1     5   Pedal cycle - contravening traffic signs 72           72   Pedal cycle - contravening warden on traffic duty   1     2   3   Pedal cycle - failing to stop for a police constable 17 11 16 18 24 10 96   Pedal cycle - lights not conforming or lit during hours of darkness 65 80 93 122 90 31 481   Pedal cycle - riding where prohibited 4 12 1       17   Pedal cycle - unauthorised passenger 1 2 6 6 3 2 20   Pedal cycle - without lights being fitted 8 6 2 9 13 4 42   Ride a pedal cycle on a footpath / causeway by the side of a road made / set apart for the use of foot passengers     9 16 14 13 52   Ride a pedal cycle on a road and fail to comply with the indication given by a traffic sign/light   3548 5893 4490 4751 2324 21006   Grand Total 2970 3928 6392 5369 5607 2624 26890
    • Hello - sorry to wade into this so late. If anyone is looking to drop off donations to the Community Fridge that runs from Albrighton Community Centre, please feel free to do so any day (seven days a week).  The centre open at 9.00am each day and reception is open until at least 5.30 each day.  We are very grateful for any donations between these times.  As I'm sure everyone can appreciate with food, energy, accommodation, and pretty much everything else costing more and more, the numbers of people that are struggling to support themselves is growing all the time, so we are grateful from whatever people are able to donate. As has been discussed in this thread, we do receive donations from Sainsburys and Marks & Spencer who donate unused food they have left over at the end of each day, and they also have customer donation boxes to allow customers to drop of extra items for us.  Locally Co-op, Lidl and Getir also support us, and slightly further afield, Brindisa, and Harrods also provide us with their unsold food. As some of you may be aware, unlike most food banks,  Community Fridges provide a lot of short life food.  Bread and cakes, as has been spoken about, but also dairy, meat, poultry and fish, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables.  We can accept donations of all these foods, on condition that they are within their 'sell by' date, where applicable.  Food with an expired 'sell by' date cannot legally be sold, or in our case, given away, because potentially it could be harmful.  Best before dates are purely advisory however, so very often food past its best before date is perfectly edible and therefore assuming the food is in reasonable condition can be eaten safely. We are also adding a new string to our bow in the coming week. From 30th April, we will also be rehoming unwanted small electrical goods.  They must be clean and in working condition.  We will check them over and PAT test them, before rehoming them with people using the Community Fridge, so please dig through your cupboards and have a look what you can find. One final note, we are desperately short of volunteers at the Community Fridge, so please get in touch if you maybe have a little time to help out. Thank you Steve [email protected] w: albrightoncommunityfridge.org i: albrighton_community_fridge_ t: albrightonse22
