messageWhy is there a fireplace in the hall?

We recently looked at a 1930s semi in the area. There was a fireplace in the regular sized hall. It was tiled over and I donít see how it could ever have functioned as a real fireplace given itís against an external wall with no chimney! Zoopla shows a few houses of the same style with something similar. Could it have been for coal delivery once upon a time? Canít find a single clue online.

Iíve seen a few and some from that era, though not common, neither are they unusual.
