Loutwo
I would like to gauge reaction to a proposed petition to J D Wetherspoon to take over and use one of the existing pubs in the local area, so that we have a more affordable option for local people. All the recent threads about expensive meals and drinks with prices just continuing to rise seems to me ridiculous. For any sort of affordable pub option (with food as a side), we need to venture over the hill to Camberwell, down to Peckham, or upto Forest Hill. What would local opinions be about a petition to get them to consider this area? I remember the power of the forum over getting M&S to open up, and I think with enough support we could encourage Wetherspoons to consider the neighbourhood.Thoughts? Louisa. seenbeen
Is there a pub large enough? All the Wethers I have been to have been very large. The only one that seems to fit the bill is the Plough...count me in

teddyboy23
Wetherspoons were looking at the cherry tree a couple of years ago . but changed their minds ,according to the previous landlord Gary . do Wetherspoons's do pizzas.

mrwb
I recommend the Crown & Sceptre in SW2.Was in there last week, 2 pints of pretty decent Adnams beer and packet of crisps for ?6.10. Easily accessible from ED on P13.It used to be a spoons but is now a smaller chain.Best value pub in London I think?
malumbu
Wetherspoons is a necessary evil. One of those places you want to hate and I avoided for years. But as the prices elsewhere go up it sort of breaks you down. There are times when it can be quite scummy and the beer feels like it is the barrel end, other times a better selection and you appreciate the wider demographic. Owner is still an rrsss though, and likes to publicise it too.Just get on shank's pony or a bus and go up to the Fox or over to the Capitol (interestingly they were trying to sell this). Leave SE22 for those who like to pay %3 or ?6 for a drink and the ambiance. Althogh Antic seems to be a good half way house, irrespective of their agenda (essentially investing in real estate)Youngs was always a good cheap alternative and Fullers now seem to be going this way too. Finally if you want cheap beer the Canopy is great, if not a pub. malumbu
Forgot you also have the Ivy and the best pub in London, the Blythe Hill Tavern not so far away
Angelina
Fully up for thatTwo cokes for the kids in the pub in the Village - pennies short of ?10I could almost live with a small bowl of chips for ?4.50 until that point. They'd added it up wrong, so my ?25 for three cups of chips, two cokes and two ciders became ?35. Will not be going there again.

Tosca
I couldn't possibly support a Weatherspoons because the owner is fiercely pro-Brexit, and has financially and in publicity supported a dishonest (not to say lying) campaign which claims this country would be economically and legally better off outside the EU. The numbers don't stack up - listen to the City, read the material from the Inst. of Fiscal Studies, and listen to the majority of voters in the Labour Party. Ask the Weatherspoons' owner if he supports a no-deal Brexit, and/or Boris Johnson. They're the most relevant questions to answer in the debate about Weatherspoons..... In the 'Spoons magazine he had various contributions from both sides- it was balanced- but you wouldn't have bothered reading that .....the majority of voters (i.e. the champagne socialists) in the labour party are doing very well out of the cheap labour, increased property prices etc etc...it is the POOR people of the UK who have been dispossessed... Loutwo
Regardless of the owner and his politics, the brand he owns offers a refreshing alternative to all the other pub co?s, especially the ones in London, who seem hell bent on dispossessing a huge chunk of the populace by overcharging for drinks and food. The great thing Wetherspoons offer is diversity in clientele as well as a menu which caters for most tastes. Louisa.
JohnL
Who reads the Spoons Mag really :)Cheap labour is solved by trade unions/workers councils (the German route) not banning immigrants.

fishbiscuits
Petition for a Wetherspoons. Haha. Very good. Because that's exactly how it works... pester them and they'll magically conjure up a suitable premises. The Grove Tavern is a TERRIBLE location for a pub. Awful. Shite. It will never, ever be a pub again. Flats or a small Tesco seem like the likely future for that place.

Loutwo
A Lidl where the co-op is, and a Wetherspoons where The Grove formerly resided, may work. Although, I have to agree with others the location just isn?t right anymore for a public house. I have a few dream wish list locations for a Wetherspoons on LL, but it probably will raise some eyebrows on here no doubt.Louisa.
