From the FB page:

"Concerned about the climate crisis?

Let's turn our ideas, hopes and fears into positive action.

Extinction Rebellion is hosting a two-day festival on Blackheath Common with the aim of bringing our local communities closer together in the face of unprecedented Global climate change.

Join us for creative discourse on climate solutions and training on direct action. You can get your clothes printed with our famous woodblocks, take part in collaborative artwork, hear from notable speakers, dance to live bands, watch engaging performances and more.

Set on Blackheath Common, a historical meeting point of the Suffragettes, Chartists, climate camps and the ?Great Uprising? of 1381, we are reclaiming the land and continuing in the tradition of rebellion."

Greta Thunberg?s ?zero-carbon? yacht trip won?t save ANY emissions as a crew have to fly to New York to sail it back

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/9739595/greta-thunbergs-carbon-free-yacht-trip-flights/

Greta's boat is in fact a carbon fibre racing yacht which cost 3.7 million pounds to build, owned by a member of the Monaco royal family. This spoiled, pampered, hysterical European child is sailing to New York in a rich man's toy, rather than appearing by satellite or Skype, presumably to lecture the Indians and the Chinese on why they should not burn coal to give their people a basic standard of living. Somehow I think they will less interested in her views than our politicians with their agenda of green washed taxes.

In reality to address the problem of decarbonising the world economy to avert climate change we will need an intellectual effort on the same scale as putting a man on the moon or building the atom bomb. Nothing is going to change because a few hysterical people think we are all going to die in 10 years, because we all won't.

Monumental trolling.

Means to an end, doesn't matter about her flaws. Loads of pampered middle class children marched past my office. Middle class pampered kids. Means to an end. Bump it up the agenda, raise the profile. Who cares about their flaws.

Net zero is written into our statute. CCC will bring it forward. Parties will fight general elections over it. We will have to change. Bring it on.

Chinese and Indians are 2nd and 6th largest economies in the world. Improving the standard of living is nothing to do with burning coal (by all means have a pop at Germany and Poland). Sod the anti-green wash. Sod Trump. Sod Bolsonaro

What end is this supposed to be a means to? Do you really want to live in the society proposed by Extinction Rebellion? Sincere though they may be they have no solution except to collapse the economy.

The problem with trying to weaponize female hysteria is that female hysteria is not a very good weapon.

The world needs complicated scientific and technical solutions to a vast range of problems to solve climate change. Nothing is going to come from PR stunts featuring a teenage girl and a sail boat.

Really? If you empower our politicians their only answer is green taxes. How well has that gone for Macron in France? How stupid do you have to be to believe any of our politicians can solve any real problem? Southwark council declared a climate emergency. LOL!! Southwark council cannot empty my dustbin reliably, but I am supposed to take what they say on climate change seriously? Why? What relevant expertise does anyone working for Southwark council have?

Do your own research. Both China and India currently still rely heavily on coal for electrical generation. However because renewables are an actual solution, both countries are increasing their use, but are nowhere near being able to stop using carbon overnight just because Greta thinks it would be a good idea.

Trump and Bolsonaro are both reactions to the failure of those that oppose them to provide credible alternatives. The fact that they are in power shows the danger of not having actual solutions to real problems.

She's raising the profile of the environment. They are raising the profile of the environment. Us humans need to change - the rich west expecting the developing countries to not develop is a separate issue, and we start in our own back yard. But on the rapidly developing (or developed) countries India and China have the technical capabilities to be leaders in environmental/alternative/sustainable technology. Or shall we just ignore it and it will go away. None of this is the barmy Jenny Jones view of controlled recession and return to growing our own flax and weaving our own linen.

I think that that is part of us taking responsibility. Birth rate is fairly stable in Western Europe and once we get over a bulge as we live longer that shouldn't provide too much pressure. But big families are still common in other cultures/countries/religions but then again population control takes us back in history to some pretty authoritarian governments. And fratricide. And the nation of spoiled only child Chinese families. Factual observations not opinions!

Why suddenly pick on Jenny Jones who, as far as is known, hasn't advocated any of those things has she?

Jenny Jones campaigned to leave Europe as (1) the EU is responsible for much of the environmental mess - support to agro business, monocultures, inefficient farming etc (2) who it treats the developing world (3) neoliberalism and supporting economic growth.

As with Lexit there are some good points here. The idea of a controlled recession and return to more sustainable production is a more difficult one.

But I see the EU as generally a force for the environment irrespective of how clumsy, bureaucratic, and heavy handed it can be.

Separately I like car free days irrespective of tokenism. I liked the reclaim the streets. Just an old punk at the end of the day.

    • This is clearly far from a unique issue. Somebody posted this on Facebook and it is so similar to posts here I asked him if he was with Tessa Jowell - he said "no, Lewisham".  "This morning on the microsecond of 8am I tried to get through to my GP on the phone...it went straight through to Hold. Tried again. Same thing. Tried a third time...Same thing. OK, I thought, I will hold. 32 minutes later, I gave up. The voice said "Did you know you can now book appointments online?" NO YOU CAN'T...I have the Patient Access App & for the past 2 years it has said "This practice is unable to book appointments online." Anyhooooo...on way back from shops I popped into the actual surgery to see if I could book an appointment in advance...that was my second mistake...Receptionist said "No. You will have to ring up on a Monday morning to see if we have any for that week" "Oh, and what time should I ring?" "It's best to ring at 8am" "But i just spent 32 minutes this morning on hold and couldn't even get through" "Yeah, sorry about that, we are short-staffed at the moment...but did you kn ow you can now book appointments in advance online?" "No, you can't" "Well, there are sometimes some appointments available online" "Nope, no there aren't...looked every day for 2 years and not a scintilla of an appointment..." "Well, you could always ring up at 8am" "You do know the whole system is completely falling to pieces?" Receptionist gives rueful look. In case I lost it and set fire to the whole fecking GP Practice there and then, I left. I will try again tomorrow morning at 8am. And see if Dr Godot will see me...We are well and truly f****d, peoples."
