Ban Christmas

And all other commercialised holidays for that matter. It?s November and Magic FM has dedicated there entire schedule to tacky festive music, Goose Green has been partly annexed by a commercial tree seller, thanks for that Southwark. Decorations on shops, lights on houses, charity collections, carols singers. GO AWAY! Humbug.

Please Lou, turn down the Crank-O-Meter just once a year.

There?s so much fun to be had. You can watch telly with tinsel on it, you can watch all the Christmas special things you love.

The Grinch

Elf

People lining up out side not one, but two cheese shops in East Dulwich Town. If you want, grab a train to London?s Borough Market and watch the queue snake around outside for the biggest (all British) cheese shop of them all, Neal?s Yard Dairy.

Steve McQueen not quite making the jump over the barbed wire fence, in The Great Escape. I?ve watched that dozens of time and each year I say ?he?s going to make it this year!?. That?s the optimistic, glass half full kinda guy I am.

Bah humbug, bah ?Cornish Yarg?

Seabag I?d rather choke on my vomit than be forced to spend half a moment watching yuppies queue up for overpriced cheese on Lordship Lane.

No, I will happily be spending the rest of November (today) drinking a lovely bottle of Argentinian Malbec with my feet soaking in a plastic washing up bowl full of radox. This is how I roll safe in the knowledge we are a solid MONTH off from any religious holidays, and this is how you and others should be spending their weekends.

Btw Steve McQueen will make over that fence this year.

I agree Lou

I?m currently sitting by the pool in the Canaries sunning myself, TOTALLY Xmas free.

It?s blissful

I?m actually working (a bit), so skiving between tasks as I wait for replies from my office.

It?s a tough life.

Surely plastic trees do more damage? I suppose it depends whether you?re looking at it from a C02 point of view, or the destruction of the ocean through plastic?

Rather than ban Xmas this could have been a better worded thread. You can't ban a festival under a western democracy.

But a good question anyway about the value and meaning.

Is it a religious festival? I expect for most not, and carols etc all rather a token.

A pagan festival? Probably the origins and more of interest to me.

A family celebration and good will on earth? With the country divided it doesn't feel that way.

A consumerist experience giving joy to those who like buying presents, receiving them and making money? That is the way it feels.

So essentially a load of nonsense but I can't bzn it.

I do take exception to growing things only to throw them away, the whole general waste of unneeded/unwanted gifts and the tat. Trees just left on the street being the worse example. I'll buy a tree to show my support of peace, harmony and love and then expect someone else to pay to dispose of it.

And excessive decorations? If you are the person on Westwood Park WTF is that about? All rather vulgar. Ironically I liked the houses on Lenard Road Cator Park, that ended up having to take it in turns but collected money for charity.

    • I'm basing it on 20+ years cycling in London and seeing the absolute biggest rule-breakers being my fellow cyclists. I once stopped at a zebra crossing to let a man cross and a cyclist behind me called me a putain for stopping.  I've even witnessed a grown man aggressively ringing his bell and swearing at a four year old child for not getting out of his way.... on a footpath.... in Burgess Park.  I genuinely cannot remember the last time a cyclist stopped for me at a pedestrian crossing.  They give the rest of us cyclists and bad name and turn the traffic against us.
    • Sorry to hear and glad you and hopefully bike OK and doesn't put you off cycling. Please do inform the police even if that sounds a waste of time.  Do consider going to the Motor Insurance Bureau, the slush fund set up by insurers for untraced/uninsured motorists.

    • Hi, Did any one manage to get the license number of the the white van that knocked me off my bike.   He was making an illegal left turn from Matham Grove, a one way street into East Dulwich Grove.  I had my hand up to indicate I was there but he ran me over anyway.  As I was lying on the road under my bike I noticed people had witnessed what had occurred and wondered if anyone has the registeration plate of the vehicle.   Thanks to those who helped me. Please message me here if you have that information or any videos of the event.  I would be grateful.  Relatively unharmed, bruised leg, twisted knee, sore shoulder. However, I need my bike to be looked at to check it is in good working order and road worthy. Sam
