messageAfter school wrap around care advice

Iím feeling stressed at the thought of organising wrap around care for my daughter who will be starting reception in September. I work in north London and regularly donít get home til 6:30 or 7pm. That rules out after school club if they finish at 6 or 6:30pm. Other option is childminder but how much do they cost? Would love to hear what other people do. Iím on a budget as I already pay out for nursery fees for my toddler. Husband often back later too and no other family to help. Argh. Thanks in advance

Could you consider nanny-share with another family? That could end up being circa £6-£7 an hour for the hours beyond the end of the after school clubs (many of which charge by the way).

If you have space in your home, an au pair could also be good choice. True au pairs are really young girls without childcare qualification looking to live abroad and improve their English. They can only work with children over two and typically only 20 hours a week but the total cost would be providing room and board, language lessons and pocket money (£80-100 a week).

Good luck!

I think your best option would be either an au pair or a nanny share. We had a nanny, then had an au pair and are now switching to an after school nanny. Au pairs are around £100 a week, nannies are generally around £12 an hour once youíve figured in tax etc.

How about another parent to help out?
Just another option.....

Thanks for your replies everyone. Would like to hear if anyone has an after school childminder. How does it work? Is it a commitment for a set period? How much does it cost? Any experience would be interesting to hear about. Thanks in advance.

A nanny will want around £14 an hour net for a share. So that works out more like £23 an hour gross for the employers.... split down the middle it's more like £11/12 an hour. Still for wraparound probably the most practical option.
