Shoe Repair

I had a negative experience with the shoe repair shop next to Rice & Pees by the East Dulwich Train Station. He was supposed to be done with a simple repair past weekend -changing the tip plastic part of a stiletto heel of my boots. Stopped by at 10:20am today to pick them up, he was closed, and he didnt answer the phone. Left him two messages. He called back 10 minutes later telling me he is taking a shower and that he needs to get dressed first. 10 minutes later I was at his store again, after making me wait for a little while in front of the door he came from inside and opened the door without any apology. Then he brought the boots saying he didnt fix them that he couldnt take the nail out of the heel. When I asked why he didnt call me to tell me this, he looked at the boots and saw my number there and said 'oh I have your number'. Than his phone rang. He reached to answer. I took the boots and left. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL and almost enjoying mistreating people type of too relaxed and uncaring attitude that I thought I better share here so people know and use another show repair shop maybe the one by Lordship Lane.

I have been a customer of the one on Gipsy Road at the base of Gipsy Hill for decades, for my motorcycle boots which need specialist soles, as well as all other shoes. This company has changed hands a few times during the time I have been a customer but I went to collect my non biker boots this morning and once again, polite service and fabulous work. I think they are called Dulwich cobblers or something; certainly 'Dulwich' was in the name. I would highly recommend them. It's a shame Matt didn't last in Nunhead. I was actually thinking of leaving my loyalty to the Gipsy Road guys and going local!

I am happy with Dulwich Cobblers in Herne Hill - I have been using them for a number of years now, it is the shop close to the station in Railroad Rd. They have never turned down any request, do an efficient and professionally robust work with reasonable prices.

Out of the area, useful I you go back and forth from Central London, for emergencies and urgencies I would recommend Le Premier Shoe Repair in Lower Marsh: I used them in a couple of occasions and they seemed really incomparable.

Best wishes

I was surprised to read the original post about Merrifield's.

I have been going here for years - probably decades (!) - for shoe repairs, and I have always found the guy extremely helpful, particularly in explaining various options and the pros and cons of each.

I would like to recommend the Shoe Repair Shop on Lordship Lane by the post office. It is in the same shop as the dry cleaners. He was very affordable and he has fixed what the other shoe repair guy next the East Dulwich Train Station could not fix. Food for thought.

I've had exactly the opposite experience!

I took a pair of shoes with wedge heels to the place in that dry cleaners once.

They just stuck normal heels on the end which meant the sole was at two heights and looked extremely odd.

The next time I took the same shoes to Merrifields, and he spliced the new heels in so the soles were all level.

He is a shoe maker as well as a repairer and in my experience takes a lot of pride in his work.

    • Another great encounter with Aria. A leaking toilet was fixed quickly and cleanly and for a reasonable price. Aria’s always going to be our first call for plumbing work, and he knows a lot of good local people for their types of jobs.
