Westminster House Youth Club - Your Local Youth Club Needs You...........

I have had many sleepless nights in this past few weeks with the pandemic creeping through my business and wiping out event after event.

It has woven itself through my life and through the lives of friends whose loved ones have been stolen, and I can only watch friends grieve from a safe distance.

Like most people, I have done what I can to keep myself sane while putting on a brave face and smile, as always, with a ?show must go on? fa?ade. Without question, we all owe huge thanks to our doctors, nurses and care workers along with other essential service workers who are daily, risking their lives to save our relatives and friends who are dying alone in Covid-19 wards. I am proud to join those standing outside every Thursday as we clap hands to express our thanks.

It troubles me however, to know that some of us here in South East London live fairly luxurious lifestyles at a time when children will go hungry and unnoticed on our doorstep. I have honestly not stopped thinking about one group of people that have been worrying me more than most and those are our teenagers and young adults. Those that are approaching teens or who have actually gotten there. Those that rely on school to have a structure to their day and to have at least one good meal too. Those young people that are in large families and small overcrowded homes who are caged together and unable to observe social distancing.

As schools ?return? on 20th April and families return to home schooling, there is inevitably a distinct difference between the haves, and have nots. Some do not even have access to paper and educational supplies that we take for granted and they are relying on Youth Club Manager Kate to distribute.

Young people are used to visiting Westminster House Youth Club in Nunhead as a familiar, safe place to go and spend time with adults who are trained to help, support and guide them. Now they are no longer permitted to leave their home, and life before lockdown is just a distant memory.

Westminster House Youth Club have arranged fuel poverty support for those in need through the Salvation Army. They have secured some basic fruit and vegetables which are being sent to families in dire need and have personal hygiene items going to families who are currently unable to fund these items.

Whilst we wait for restrictions on our ?normal? life to be relaxed, I would like to concentrate and focus on what I am good at ? feeding people a delicious, healthy, nutritious meal. Meals for those who may be unable to work, shop and cook due to Covid-19 restrictions and for those families who are now forced to self-isolate and have much younger siblings unable to offer stable support or have the knowledge to cook from scratch when our immune systems are in desperate need of a boost.

As many of you know, I have given 100% of the profits from my East Dulwich Supper Club to Westminster House Youth Club to fund our partnered programme Cooking From Scratch and Bridging The Gap. This offers monthly cookery classes to young people and then these young people invite the elder generation in the community to the club for Afternoon Tea where the young people bake, serve and dine alongside them.

Now, is your opportunity to join me as I am crowd funding to raise money to provide cooked meals for the young people, their families and those in desperate need in the local community. SE15 is a postcode which is divided; on one side gentrification and on the other extreme poverty. Now it really is your turn? Your turn to read my why? Your turn to be my who? Your turn to realise lend your support.

With weeks ahead without any hope of work, and in a time of prolonged uncertainty, your donation will make such a huge and important difference. I will put my money where my mouth is and have started the fund with ?100.00.

I have used my network of contacts to find self employed chefs who are ready, willing and able to cook a variety of meals to suite all palates, these will passed to Kate who runs WHYC and she will distribute to those families most in need.

Please, if you are working from home (#WFH) and saving on travel and/or lunches then why not donate your #lockdownlunch savings to a good cause?

60 meals a week over 10 weeks will cost ?2,000.00

120 meals a week over 10 weeks will cost ?4,000.00

180 meals a week over 10 weeks will cost ?6,000.00

240 meals a week over 10 weeks will cost ?8,000.00

300 meals a week over 10 weeks will cost ?10,000.00

As a final thought?. Eating a well-balanced nutritious diet is important for supporting the immune system; the nutrients then influence the body?s ability to fight infection. The World Health Organisation suggests that, while no one food will cure the Covid-19 pandemic, a healthy diet helps strengthen our immune systems ability to cope with infections.

Hello All

I want to thank everyone who has kindly donated to this wonderful fundraiser.

We managed to get over 100 meals each Friday for many weeks, to those in need in Nunhead.

You have been wonderful and I can?t thank you enough

It?s not over yet but I can feel the donations have slowed down.

If you are able to donate to keep this going, I know it would be appreciated.

You have helped make amazing things happen and I can?t thank you all enough

    • all I said was "take a pro cash stance too far" - what twisting have I done?   plenty of good arguments for retention of cash - but let's not get too detached from reality either lest we go back to trading livestock   But to go back to your post DD:   "Or don't stop using cash" Yep plenty of people will agree with this - nothing controversial here   "Stop using your phone or even your watch as a banknote" - getting a bit weird now - why not - it's super convenient for both users and businesses. And far easier to keep a track of your balance using your electronic wallet than old systems of cheques taking days to clear, how much did I take from cashpoint 2 days ago etc. But people will differ so whatever works   "God only knows how much damage we're doing to the planet because all the above must require a hell of a lot of resources and juice from the grid" - big straw man argument here. Why bring this in? Unless you are also suggesting we don't buy any goods not made from within a 5 mile radius and nothing transported by air or sea? "a big lump of plastic with a screen and full of personal information that can be easily gleamed." I've had my phone stolen but nothing was lost because it was secure.I've been mugged and lost cash and valuable. It's not a binary thing   "your sky rocket with a phone in your hand. It's become a source of dopamine for many. It's an addiction for many."  Proper overreaching now
    • I agree with the posts that housing is an urgent need in Peckham and throughout Southwark. But as Alice says, it’s the percentage of social / affordable housing that matters. In October last year, there were over 4,200 households on the Council’s waiting list for housing in Peckham alone (over 17 thousand across Southwark). But the developer is only offering 35% affordable housing (which means that 65% will be unaffordable). Both Southwark Council and the GLA say that a big development like this should provide 50% affordable housing.   Re-development of the site is a great opportunity to make the town centre “cleaner, safer and more sustainable and welcoming” (borrowing Nigello’s great words). Is this dense development going to do that, when it provides no real green and open space where people can spend time outside and nature can help us tackle the growing problems of climate change like absorbing flood water, cooling the air on baking summer days? Are 7-storey buildings along Rye Lane (where the average buildings are 2-3 storeys) going to be welcoming to users of the town centre? How will the development impact on Peckham’s economy? Currently there is busy daytime commercial activity of shops providing for different demographics and needs including a rich offering of international groceries and other products, alongside a thriving night-time economy. I can’t see anything in the proposal that suggests how it will enhance and empower the local economy. Yes please, let’s have a great development on this site that enhances the town centre. This means not letting the developer get away with packing people into dense blocks that turn their back on the town centre and which will be a recipe for urban decay in the long run. Peckham deserves better than this!
    • You know when you are wrong but think you're right because the internet etc? Read it and twist it how you want if it makes you feel better. I use a card as well as cash. You are pro jumping the gun and pro cynical. Yeah,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Pro cash 🙃Who isn't? Is being pro card some kind of middle class virtue signaling thing? Like jumping to conclusions seems to be. Oooh the uncouth commoner uses that dirty cash stuff. Orf with his head.
