Best route by car from ED to the M11

The best route on Google maps will be different every time depending on the time of day and the traffic conditions ...

Your best bet is to look at it just before you leave, then keep it on during the journey in case of unexpected changes in traffic conditions eg a hold up due to an accident, so it will reroute you to avoid it.

It sort of depends what time of day you're going. If it's likely to be early, ie. when roads are quiet, I'd generally go along the A2 to Greenwich and Blackheath, then through Blackwall Tunnel then straight up the A12 past the Olympic Park.

If it's after say 10ish on a Sunday when roads likely to be busier, I would personally go down through Peckham, across the Old Kent Road through Bermondsey and through Rotherhithe Tunnel - then take the A13 out until you hit the North Circular (A406) at Barking, then up there a little bit to the start of the M11.

I go to the M11 on the way to the North East quite a lot, and find I do the second of these routes much more as tends to be quicker in busy traffic.

Either way I wouldn't be tempted to go across Tower Bridge, or go out across Dartford. Both much longer.

ETA: Worth also downloading Waze - I find cross referencing the Waze data (real time user generated traffic) with Google Map and my in car nav gives me a fair indicator :)

I do this quite a lot. I always find Rotherhithe tunnel, A12 to Redbridge roundabout & M11 quickest.

There are several ways to get from the tunnel to the A12 (none of them far & the easiest probably being Burdett Rd in Limehouse & Devons Rd.)so, I agree: use Google Maps or Waze if available.

If you're travelling tomorrow, remember that it's car-free day, so Tower Bridge and loads of roads north and south of the river and in the City will be closed from c.7a.m. I'd go east via Blackheath to the Blackwell Tunnel then north to the M11, but allow lots of time as there's bound to be a knock-on effect from the closures!

    • Nor me, I left there years ago, even though it's just round the corner from where I live.
    • I noticed this announcement en passant while doing various searches on the libraries website.  When I eventually went back to  make a proper note, I couldn't find it.  Eventually discovered it in the middle of the catalogue basic search page, and thought it well to post it here too. Easter opening hours All libraries will be closed on the following days: Friday 29 March 2024   Sunday 31 March 2024  Monday 1 April 2024
    • I am at The Gardens. I saw GP on a Wednesday and he recommended physio, he checked availability and offered Tessa Jowell Centre for Saturday at 1 pm or Forest Hill Road Practice on a Monday at 11 am. I chose FH- very efficient/ Physio at FH very helpful, sent me some neck exercises and referred me for spinal assessment at Kings.
    • Of course, people's experiences may vary, but I'm afraid I can't recommend the DMC on Crystal Palace Rd.
