I thought there were plans for the bowling green?

Can't remember what they were, though!

Oh yes that's right, it was Crazy Golf. They had that at the Horniman over the summer I think.

But nothing seems to have been done for ages at the bowling green? Did they give up on their plans?

The plans for mini golf were rejected by the council. The cost of playing was going to be well out of reach of many families. I'm not sure how successful/profitable the one in Hornimans was this past summer.

The Council is still looking for solutions for the area - however they say that it costs money to maintain the hut and they want something that will pay for its upkeep. So - tennis courts/basketball etc won't meet their approval.

The previous bowls club no longer exists and no one has come forward to start a new one.

It is a huge pity to see it sitting there unused. Friends of Peckham Rye park are hoping to install an opening near the Sexby Gardens so at least people can get into it (it is locked at the moment and not accessible). Any suggestions for its use that will meet Council approval(ie bring in revenue) would be gratefully received!

The Friends have not made any proposal for the old Bowls area - we are a small group of volunteers who work towards preserving and maintaining the park. Not a business or a charity even! Our main event is the fete in early September and we look after the wildlife garden.

It would be the Council that would fund a basketball or tennis court. And its they who will decide whats to be done with the Bowls area, though we (and anyone else who wishes to) have the opportunity to express our views on a proposal.

I understand that the Bowls area was discussed at a recent Community meeting and Matthew Hill who is a project manager for Southwark Council's leisure department is involved in preparing options for the Council to consider. His email is [email protected] if anyone wishes to contact him

Thanks for the replies and emails.

It's interesting that areas of a park need to bring in revenue. I get it, but the new kids playground must have cost a fortune and I don't see how it pays for itself (outside of parents spending at the cafe). Also, how the upkeep of the rugby/aussie rules (?!)/football areas pays for themselves is beyond me. I guess clubs pay a fee to the park?

Anyway, i'll look to send Matthew Hill an email :)

I'm afraid that everything has to pay its way these days! Southwark at least is still maintaining its parks to some extent - some boroughs are not.

The Friends put pressure on councillors to maintain and improve the park for all age groups. But Council budget constraints are a constant issue.

    • It doesn't work as a commercial venture.  Bit churlish to say I told you so.  I told you so.  I'll send less greetings cards.  What pees me off is international postage where you can no longer send light letters at 10 grammes, normal ones up to 20g, now all at the much more expensive 100 g  Didn't we vote to take back control and price everything according to irrational units like ounces? That's some obscure humour btw
    • Available from Monday April 8th 2024, 2on2Walkies take pride in doggie care and only walk 2 furry friends at a time. I make sure that they get plenty of doggie interaction and socialisation in the park as well as making friends. Back home happy and tired I always check that the water bowl has fresh water and always make sure the doggie is left comfortable before I leave. I'm fully insured and have a couple of slots available for local walks to either Peckham Rye Park or Dulwich Park.  Thank you!
    • Why would they only send them recorded delivery? I used the signed for option yesterday.
    • > however I know I will have to prove it and provide a receipt,  both I can't provide. So what leads you to say that the dustmen have done damage to it?
