Best Chinese restaurant?

Yeah Silk road for Xinjiang style food. (not sure if it's Uyghur-specific or not, as they do have pork on the menu, but it seems geographically correct).


Wulli Wulli is OK, the Szechuan section is small but it's not bad at all. The rest of the Anglo-Cantonese type menu is fine, for that type of food.


Hong Kong City dim sum is not bad at all, if you've ever had dim sum in Chinatown then it is basically the same thing. I think in the evening they do fixed-priced all-you-can-eat menus, but I've never tried it... it might be fine, I have no idea.. lots of onions, one imagines.


Wagamama is not really Chinese... it's more sort of Japanese-ish with a handful of pan-Asian type dishes. I don't even think they have any branches in south London. FWIW I think it's nothing special, but it is consistent... if you find yourself in a shopping mall or a random high street, it's a pretty safe bet. They deserve credit for bringing katsu curry to the masses, although it should really be pork...

Dragon Castle on top end of Walworth Road was also ok for Dim Sum although haven't been there for ages.


Are there many great Chinese places though outside of central London? IME they all tend to be generically bland and aimed at British palates.

Some good vietnamese places here and there though

Wuli Wuli is OK.


Not keen on Wagamama (though as said above it isn't Chinese). I think it's gone way downhill since its early days ( but I haven't been there for years, so maybe it has gone uphill again!

I?ve been a few times. There?s some fresh veg dishes done well here. I like the crispy seafood noodles.


It?s run by a guy who used to work in Won Kei in China Town and the food is quite similar.

I used to use Mr Liu (which stayed open late) because of its proximity to my house.

Food would still be hot when I got home. They were really friendly.


148 Chinese closes early. 10.30 on week days.

You need to get there earlier to place any order for Take Away


Too early if you have been to the Pub and want a late Chinese meal.

Did try it once. The food was poor. not as good as Mr Liu was previously.

Never had an msg issue with either. That?s a bit of a perpetual myth around such food. I?m not saying it?s never used, but ?full of? along with ?cheap? has a certain dismissive ring to it, no?


The WonKei reference is more towards a Hong Kong style of Chinese restaurant.


And like any restaurant, if you don?t want a certain ingredient, like MSG, just tell them. But I like 148, they try hard and make some nice dishes. Their Char Sui is home made on the premises.

Yeah. I've not been for ages either... TBH mainly because we find Hong Kong City easier to get to. But it used to be quite good. I believe they actually had a dim sum chef making many of the items himself (usually dim sum is bought in), but not sure if it's still the case or not.


If you want dim sum that's a bit fancy... A Wong in Victoria is quite something..

I was referring to the restaurant in chinatown which was known for rude staff and huge plates of food, see below

So what?s your point?


That article was from 2001, it mentions the changes, but little else and nothing about MSG in the article. I?m wondering if you?ve ever eaten there?


Or is this a place that you?ve just heard about, and assumed it was poor quality, because it?s ?cheap? and therefore it?s assumed to be ?full of MSG?


Lazy conformation bias is a dangerous thing.

    • Hmmm, millions of animals are killed each year to eat in this country.  10,000 animals (maybe many more) reared to be eaten by exotic pets, dissected by students, experimented on by cosmetic and medical companies.  Why is this any different? Unless you have a vegan lifestyle most of us aren't in a position to judge.  I've not eaten meat for years, try not to buy leather and other animal products as much as possible but don't read every label, and have to live with the fact that for every female chick bred to (unaturally) lay eggs for me to eat, there will be male that is likely top be slaughtered, ditto for the cow/milk machines - again unnatural. I wasn't aware that there was this sort of market, but there must be a demand for it and doubt if it is breaking any sort of law. Happy to be proved wrong on anything and everything.
    • I don't know how spoillable food can be used as evidence in whatever imaginary CSI scenario you are imagining.  And yes, three times. One purchase was me, others were my partner. We don't check in with each other before buying meat. Twice we wrote it off as incidental. But now at three times it seems like a trend.   So the shop will be hearing from me. Though they won't ever see me again that's for sure.  I'd be happy to field any other questions you may have Sue. Your opinion really matters to me. 
    • If you thought they were off, would it not have been a good idea to have kept them rather than throwing them away, as evidence for Environmental Health or whoever? Or indeed the shop? And do you mean this is the third time you have bought chicken from the same shop which has been off? Have you told the shop? Why did you buy it again if you have twice previously had chicken from there which was off? Have I misunderstood?
    • I found this post after we just had to throw away £14 of chicken thighs from Dugard in HH, and probably for the 3rd time. They were roasted thoroughly within an hour of purchase. But they came out of the oven smelling very woofy.  We couldn't take a single bite, they were clearly off. Pizza for dinner it is then. Very disappointing.
