  1. Hi, having worked in furniture all my life before becoming a gardener, I would say the legs would be fitted with a large self tapping screw & could be easily done, but if you don’t succeed give me a call & I will do it for you Nigel 07759862191
  2. Hi, I have been gardening for 23 years & have wonderful nursery for you to choose your trees from. I can give you advice & plant them up for you. I give gardening tips here on the forum & this is a really good time to plant trees My name is Nigel please give me a call or a text on 07759862191
  3. Christmas & the New year are over, so it’s time to get out there & prepare your garden for another year of form beauty colours & connecting with nature. If you are lucky enough to have a garden , let’s get you enjoying it this season So let’s get started with 1. pruning Hedges. The best time to plant new hedges & prune evergreen ones before the birds want to nest in them. Prune them hard for the season to come . There are some different choices for a hedge in the nursery now. We just planted a pretty Pittosporum hedge in Dulwich village to replace a box that was suffering from Box moth . For those of you suffering with Box moth there are now plenty of alternatives for you to choose from . For deciduous hedges you can refurbish them with a light pruning & cleaning out of leaves & rubbish Remember to give them a good feed of manure when you’ve finished Last chance to prune Apple & Pear trees. With all fruit trees you need to let the air flow through them taking crossed over branches out & cutting deadwood out remembering to paint over the cuts with a tree paint One of two months you can prune Wisteria is February in order to give you flowers . So prune back to the third /fifth bud from the main branch & cut all dead branches & then give a potassium feed Prune Evergreen Jasmine & Bougainvillea lightly Cut back Raspberry canes to 6 inches from the ground Cut back ornamental grasses before new shoots appear, cut off damaged & diseased leaves from Christmas roses Hellebores & give them a tidy up to give you their long lasting colours And lastly prune your Roses . Give bush Roses a good prune back to a bud each time giving the bush a good rounded shape With climbing Roses cut the very long branches back to a bud & trim them to suit what they are climbing With Floribunda Roses dead head & trim. Give them all a good feed of manure digging it into the roots . You can attach the longer branches of climbing Roses to a cane dome & the will give you more flowers 2. Planting Plant up in baskets & borders plenty of Cyclamen for colour feeding them & deadheading regularly for more flowers Plant up Roses & please choose ones with lovely scents . There are too many new ones with no scent !! Again plant up with a good measure of manure & heal in well leaving no holes & gaps around the roots Still a good time to plant all shrubs trees & climbers As said earlier it’s the best time to plant up hedging . There are some lovely evergreen hedges you can buy . As said there are many new replacements for Box hedging . Or you can plant a deciduous hedge like a Beech .Best to ask your nursery which one to choose 3. Lawns . Mostly leave alone but give them a good raking & clear all debris off them . You can cut their edges to clean them up , but don’t cut yet 4. Tidy weeds from borders , add plants to gaps & lay a good mulch of compost which will keep the plants warm & give them a good feed into Spring. When finished flowering you can divide Snowdrops for free plants next year That’s it for now & as usual if you can’t do this yourselves ask one of the recommended gardeners on this forum or even myself Happy Gardening Nigel 07759862191

  9. With the temperatures dropping lower, please put a fleece round your most tender plants . If you cannot get one use bubble wrap or straw
  10. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU THIS MONTH IS TO GET YOUR LANDSCAPING JOBS DONE IN WINTER. IT GIVES YOUR GARDEN TIME TO RECOVER BY SPRING & USE OF YOUR GARDEN IN SUMMER Hopefully you won’t have been affected by storm Ciaron this week & you can get out there to do the jobs you need to do So let’s get to it , there’s a lot to do as usual 1. Plant Tulips Daffodils & Spring flowers to give you plenty of colour in your garden & containers . Use good quality Cyclamen in pots & borders & beautiful Christmas Roses Hellebores for lovely washed out colours in the shaded areas of your garden 2. Prune Roses back hard to prevent wind rock ( not a new band 😂😂😂). Prune back with sharp secateurs on an angle just before a bud , giving a nice shape to your shrub 3. After this storm clear all debris & leaves off your borders & lawns with a rake & blower . Add the smaller bits to your compost & burn the rest in a small fire . If you haven’t already aerated your lawn , put holes in with a fork every 6 inches & give your lawn an Autumn feed . New lawns can added at this time of year because you are not using them & it gives plenty of time to establish for Spring 4. Power wash paths & patios to make them safe from moss & verdigris 5. Raise pots & containers onto feet to avoid them water logging & freezing 6. Put out good quality bird food for Birds & animals you wish to have in your garden. They need it & add interest to your garden 7. Time to pick any fruits you are lucky to have in your garden & leave a box at your gate for friends & neighbours to enjoy if you have too many Well that’s it for now . And to say I will be doing those beautiful Christmas trees again later in December. So let me have your orders by text. Nigel @ 07759 862191 And if you don’t have time for these jobs get in touch with the recommended gardeners & landscapers on this site . I have just about retired & given my company to my Son Oli . You can contact him at Exterior Design Gardens 07549 418219 With temperatures lower this week, please protect your tender plants with a fleece or bubble wrap or straw Happy Gardening 😁
  11. Hi , this is something we can do for you this week. Please call me on WhatsApp 07961888253 Thanks Nigel

  13. Back again from running my retreats out in Kefalonia. Very hot this year 🔥🔥🔥 Right, where to start? There’s a lot to do, so pay attention at the back there 😂 1. Lawns Give a higher cut to help the grass survive the warm weather we are having & the wetter weather to come. Rake & spike the lawn every 6inches before feeding with Autumnal lawn feed , don’t use Summer feed, it will encourage growth & you’ll be cutting it in the winter!! Autumn feed encourages hardiness & root growth. Try to use a lawn spreader so you don’t feed it too much. It will burn it 2. Hedges Prune hedges before winter, cut them narrower at the top , helps with the snow if we get it & stops the hedge from shading itself at the bottom 3. Divide herbaceous perennials , free plants !! did the extra plants in well with a little compost. While you are at it, collect seeds from hardy annuals & perennials . You can plant them out now or put them in a dry paper bag til spring . Continue deadheading plants such as Dahlias Roses Delphiniums & Penstemons. Take cuttings of Pelargoniums & Osteospermums, more free plants . Take care of your hanging baskets & planting boxes by deadheading watering & feeding them 4. Time to start planting Spring flowering bulbs . Maybe while you’re doing the lawn you can pop a few in secluded places in the lawn . Snowdrops Crocuses & Daffodils 5. Don’t forget to pick all those beautiful fruits & vegetables if you are lucky enough to have a veg patch . Or if not a great time to take the kids to the park or the countryside & go Blackberrying . Such fun getting torn to shreds & covered in blackberry juice & scratches 😂😂😂 6.How about sowing a Wildflower meadow to encourage Bees & Butterflies. Good time before winter to lay a new lawn to establish itself over the winter months. 7. Time to treat fences sheds pergolas furniture using an ecological water based paint & fix that leaky old shed & outbuildings while your there 8. This is the end I promise. Power wash your patios paths & decks to stop them becoming slippery over winter & developing algae In this weather, all your plants & lawns need a good watering. Best in the evening to avoid dehydration & give them all a good soaking Thats it for now & as usual. If it’s all too much or you want your garden redesigning or going over please use the recommended gardeners on this forum, including my Son Oli at Exterior Design Gardens. Oh I got a bad review. Not bad for 22 years, but I take responsibility & the lad I was working with, no longer works with me HAPPY GARDENING 😁
  14. I take full responsibility for this job & would like to say , I do the smaller jobs nowadays & this in no way reflects on the work of Oli & his team at Exterior Design Gardens Bradley was trying to copy the wall on the other side of the path & having built a few walls before, I was confident he could do the job. The wall he built was not good enough & he built another one . It was an improvement but not enough to please Josh Upon request I refunded Josh the cost of the stock bricks, which were more expensive than the last time I bought them . They have gone up considerably recently. I had to pay Bradley £240 for 2 days work & for materials I am sorry Josh feels aggrieved, but we always try to do the best job possible. In this case the customer was not happy. I apologise & reiterate, this is not the work of Oli & his team at Exterior Design Gardens, but mine . I no longer work with Bradley & wish him well. I continue with the ethos of “ doing a good job” Nigel Hawkins
  15. I can do this for you & give it to my son who is a landscaper to do. We are local & have been in the area for 20 years Nigel Exterior Design Gardens 07759 862191
