I don't really like the idea of animals being posted on this forum looking for new homes rather than using proper rescue re homing charities.I think it's better and the responsible thing to do. I realise rescue centres are almost always full and maybe people who advertise here had already tried, however it worries me. Just thought I've throw this out there!
I think it depends on who is rehoming. I personaly don't like to see people selling animals, but as I understand it, that is not allowed on this forum. But let's say someone, for reasons they can not help, has to find a new home for their pet. I know of many people who have been turned away by rehoming charities seeking that help, because charities are overwhelmed. So what are they supposed to do? If they can not use a forum like this, then where do they go? I would argue that because of the demographic nature of this forum, that they are more likely to find a good home here for a pet, than some other ottions like gumtree (you will find people trying to rehome pets there too). I would say this is a good forum to find responsible new owners for a pet.
In an ideal world I would agree that rehoming of animals should be left to the rescue rehoming charities but the reality is that these are overflowing already and under-resourced. If, heaven forbid, I ever need to rehome my animals, I would try both rehoming centres and try to rehome myself. I know I would scrutinise prospective owners every bit as carefully as the charities, I would want to make sure they go to a good home.

We have had cats for many years, all but 2 have been 'rehomed'. 2 were because new private landlord did not allow pets and family were also on the 3 rd floor of converted house. 1 was due to a relationship breakdown, 1 was due to the death of it's elderly owner (he had arranged with us before his death that we would take her). Another cat was rescued from an abusive owner by a friend, but did not get on with her other cats so asked us to take her.

We currently have 3 female cats. All use the cat flap and rarely go further than 2 houses each side and the houses adjoining the back of house.

Many people will take on a cat from the Forum if the owner needs genuinely to rehome.

I'm not going to knock Battersea but when I visited they mostly had Staffies. I remember seeing a 10 month old one called Tonto (sp) and after 2 minutes he returned, looking forlorn, back to the far side of his pen. Another Time-Waster he must have thought. I wrote about him on their Website , hoping someone would give him a home, which I was not going to do. After 3 months he disappeared from that Website and when I rang Battersea to find out where he had gone they informed me " he turned aggressive" and was euthanized. He hated the noise of the trains and other dogs barking and a 10 month old Staffie needs plenty of exercise.

They should have sent him to a Country offshoot like Brands Hatch or Windsor.

    • It’s already been scaled down by those who don’t want change for the last 15+ years
    • It's about scale.  London was a low rise city and the massive developments in the Elephant, Vauxhall Cross, the City and no doubt elsewhere have come from Livingstone's time as Mayor where he recognised that we need far more office space in London to compete on the world financial circuit,  That said interesting that there is still massive investment in retail such as Battersea Power Station and Kings Cross at a time where more and more purchases are on line. As with everything there is probably an acceptable compromise and perhaps the project will be scaled down a little.
