two free sociable cycle rides Sat June 3rd

Recommended Posts

NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below.

For 3 June we have two Southwark Healthy Rides, one short and one long, with registration on Eventbrite as usual.  If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling (How to cancel)

Ride 1, A Tour of 9 Cabmen's Shelters < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-tour-of-9-cabmens-shelters-tickets-644823904657 >

Described as "A cross between a cricket pavilion and a large garden shed" these distinctive green structures were set up by the Cabmen's Shelter Fund from 1875 to provide resting places, food and shelter for London's cabbies - from horse-drawn hansoms to the modern day LEVC-TX (electric taxi).

Numbers have dwindled from 61 to just 13 - all of which are now Grade 2 listed as "Buildings of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve them".

Jane leading.  Start & Finish: Emma Cons Gardens, opposite the Old Vic Theatre. (Toilets at Pret if necessary) Start time 10am, finish 1.30pm. Our route will take us past 9 of the survivors, starting with Temple Place then on up to Russell Square, the West End, Kensington & Chelsea, Pimlico and back to the Embankment.  As we'll mainly be in central London, expect a mix of segregated cycle paths, some short stretches on busy main roads plus quieter back streets. We'll have a coffee/loo stop at some point, either in Kensington Gardens or a transpontine detour to Battersea Park (because, yes - we do go south of the river!).

Specially easy route for less experienced riders and families. Route visits Burgess Park, Myatts Fields, Elam St Open Space, Ruskin Park, Dulwich Park, Peckham Rye Park. 55% off road path, 40 % quiet streets, 6% busy road.  15km (9 miles), mostly flat, one short climb.  Route at http://bit.ly/3amtFfd

These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.

    • The proper answer, of course, is that you really do need to speak to a solicitor. You will probably be told that if the loft space is theirs, they can do what they like with it. However you can't build a proper loft conversion without changing at least some of the roof. The roof, as an external part of the building, is usually shared and not demised. They will probably need to demise it if they want to convert.    But it really does depend on the specific situation.
    • Very sorry to hear of the experience of the original poster and wishing their pup a speedy recovery.  I would just like to say that bull breeds can be the most fantastic of dogs and there are many around Dulwich that do the breed (s) proud. It's so lazy, but way too common, to simply label an entire breed (or group of breeds) as 'bad' and another as 'good' but it's exactly this attitude that has led to 1000's of great dogs sat in shelters whilst you can't move for cockapoo's, daschunds, etc. in any London park. It's way more complex than 'good' or 'bad'  and inevitably, there will always be well-behaved dogs, and less well behaved dogs across all breeds. The key to everything with dogs is the owners, regardless of breed. Treat your dog well, train it, understand it, and take precautions if necessary (i.e. keep it on a lead).
    • Looking for a second hand iPad Pro, ideally 6th Gen 12.9" but open to others if anyone is looking to sell.   Thanks
    • The post is only focussed on parcels so maybe I should ask for all post to be sent via a box.  It would probably be cheaper to send  a  letter in a parcel that is tracked rather than pay 10.00 for a letter to be sent recorded delivery 🚚 🚚 🚚
