Approach

Central to my teaching approach is the desire to cultivate in my students a love and joy for music making, whatever their ambitions or commitment may be. Each student is unique and has a unique relationship with music. Consequently, I do not believe in bringing a predetermined agenda, but instead allow the aims of the student to inform the trajectory of the lessons. For some, this results in rigorous training to attain the highest standards; for others, a more relaxed learning environment. At whatever stage of development, I work with the student to establish a pathway towards their goals which they will find both stimulating and fulfilling.

Inspiration

Music transcends time and place, bringing human beings together from every culture and background through universal language. It encapsulates every element of life - from history and geography to culture and art, channelling the intellectual and the emotional. Learning to play an instrument is the first step to unlocking this fascinating and vast multi-dimensional world. Being involved in the process of helping others to take these steps and experience the joy of music making is the most exciting element of my role as a teacher. I am dedicated to inspiring others to uncover the values to be cultivated through music in addition to realising their full artistic potential.

Testimonial

“Quite aside from his deep connection with the pieces he performed and his superb musicianship, Joel was a brilliant communicator who put pupils at ease with his warm manner. Performing in a masterclass is a daunting business, but quite soon it was evident that pupils had forgotten the audience and were in a personal conversation with him about their playing and interpretation - all left with smiles on their faces, inspired to get down to some serious practice.” - Mr. Tom Brimelow (Head of Music, Colyton Grammar School)

    • Nope that is boring,  I want something creative.  Maybe turn them into Xmas cards.  I understand from those daytime television programmes that don't involve buying houses, DIY, antiques, bargain hunting and the second World War that this is called 'upcycling'. AI suggests: Upcycling old cheque books can involve repurposing the paper from old checks into creative items like notebooks, journals, art pieces, gift tags, bookmarks, decorative paper, or even small boxes, by cutting, decorating, and assembling the paper to create new functional or decorative objects, while ensuring any personal banking information is properly obscured or removed. And there is vid too
