On the 26th Oct we have 2 rides, John leading a new ride with a very unusual theme and Bruce with a local ride through some nice open spaces.

Cunning Cover-ups: London’s Best-hidden Ventilation Shafts.  < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cunning-cover-ups-cycle-ride-to-londons-best-hidden-ventilation-shafts-tickets-1049731654637 >  London’s network of tunnels (for tubes, trains and sewerage) needs a huge number of ventilation shafts, but these are often considered to be a blot on the landscape. Over the years, an astonishing range of cover-ups have been attempted, and on this fun ride we’ll see ten of the finest examples.
We set off from Canada Water on a 20-mile route, visiting Burgess Park, Pimlico Tube Station, and Hyde Park, where we stop for a leisurely break by the Serpentine. After circling the park we head for the river, cycling from Westminster bridge to Waterloo bridge, before heading for the Strand. From there, we go to Paternoster Square, then Finsbury Circus and finally to see our last example at the Bank of England. From there, it’s down to London Bridge, where some riders will probably choose to catch a train, while the rest of us make a quick and easy return to Canada Water by way of Tooley Street and Jamaica Road. John S. leading. Aiming to be at London Bridge for 2pm and Canada Water at 2.30.

Easy 2½ hour ride from Peckham visiting Peckham Rye Park, Blythe Hill Fields, Ladywell Fields, Hilly Fields, Brockley & Ladywell Cemetery and Brookmill Park. Start 10am, Peckham Square next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre. Finish back in Peckham around 12.30. Several short stops in parks plus a longer coffee stop. Bruce leading. Draft route at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1TYwOGhEJ3S8IFaz_LjyAn2vibRnieig&usp=sharing.

Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe (note there is shared path on both these ride). If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. This ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

    • There was good item on Radio 4’s consumer affairs programme You &Yours on 1st December. It was about these CIC fund raising scams and refers to this We R Blighty mob in particular (they have been successfully prosecuted twice and fined for their activities in the City of London). Also mentioned the “knife crime charity” lot who also show up in ED. The advice was to give them nothing and that they are breaking the law. It’s on the BBC Sounds app or via this link  (the item starts at 41m51s in): https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002n065      I think you know perfectly well that is not what the poster is saying. There are a lot of CICs (there are now 37,000 of them) that have been set up specifically to mislead the public into handing over money. This We R Blighty is one such. These are the details of one of the cases against them in the City last month: https://news.cityoflondon.gov.uk/we-r-blighty-told-to-pay-out-thousands-over-illegal-collections/
    • Are you saying all CICs are dodgy? I think that’s totally unfair.
    • Similar deal to those Hive City guys who also camp outside of M&S, also a dodgy CIC rather than a charity
    • please report this to the police - were there any witnesses? She should face charges. the owner should not allow dogs off lead - I'm so sorry this has happened.  It would be good if you can identify her - are there cameras - in the cafes around? - follow her, find her address and report her. https://www.met.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/ac/animal-crime/ also report to the park wardens so they can be found Your Local Council: Contact them to report issues in parks or public areas, especially if you know the dog or owner, as they investigate under local bylaws and the Dangerous Dogs Act. https://www.gov.uk/control-dog-public/report-a-dog
