Had these notices just been put up on 1 April, I might have thought it was a joke, but no.

I have a suggestion for them.

Make the 40 run from London Bridge to East Dulwich again, and vice versa.

FFS. Words (almost) fail me, which is a very rare occurrence.

Sorry about the poor photo. I can't add the original, for some reason.

Indeed. I have spent a lot of time there lately unfortunately.

But the 40 always stopped in Borough High Street anyway, an easy walk from Guys.

To be fair Guys is also an easy walk from London Bridge station. Down the escalator by the Shard and you are practically there.

Depending on where you live, it's the walk to the station at the ED end that's more inconvenient than the bus was  (and needing to allow for the possibility of train cancellations, which happened to us twice recently. Luckily we had allowed lots of time).

I think bus travel, especially speed of journeys, from SE22 to town has improved. I’d maybe remove a stop or two and have more ticket inspections but on the whole it’s decent VFM. (A minibus service from south SE22 to Herne Hill down the very quiet and wide Court Lane would be a welcome addition, though!)

Which buses are we talking about?

The 12 and the 176?

The 176 was much more convenient when it went to Oxford Circus rather than stopping at Tottenham Court Road, and the 12 goes all round the houses (literally!) just to get to Camberwell Green from SE22 before it sets off for town.

Sorry about the negative vibes. Whilst I am having a moan, the 12 used to go to Notting Hill Gate (or possibly Queensway), which was very useful as  a friend lived there at the time.

I agree with @Sue's first post on this subject, bring the 40 back to its origional.route via London Bridge as it was a good alternative to the train

I haven't actually done the QR thing yet.

Have they deliberately put it right at the bottom so you have to bend right down to about 30cm above the pavement to do it?

On a busy shopping street?

Apart from anything else, this potentially prevents older people, anybody in a wheelchair and anybody with physical issues preventing them from easily getting down there (not to mention then having to use their mobile and get back up again, possibly encumbered with bags which they don't want to put down) from taking part in the consultation.

Yet they are probably the very people who would benefit most from having the 40 returned to its former route, given it was such an easy way to get to Guys if you lived within easy reach of a 40 bus stop at the East Dulwich end.

Walworth Rd was very jammed for ages and the old E and C layout made for more slow traffic. Also, bus hopping is now a well-received and economical possibility for lots of people—many other cities adopt this approach and I see all kinds of passengers doing this, including older people, quite acceptingly and easily. So, I think the journey from SE22 to central London is better than it was for me and at least some others. There’s never going to be a universally loved service.

But less attractive (in reference to posts above, including mine) to those undergoing significant outpatient treatments for, e.g. cancer, some of which can be tiring at best and debilitating otherwise.

    • I don't think this is only a left wing thing. The Tories kicked themselves out of government after splitting over Europe, and then decapitating 3 (or was it 4?) leaders. UKIP was effectively a split from the Tories to pick up the anti-European vote; it then split and Farage set up Reform - and then split from the people who he set it up with. And then Rupert Lowe set up Restore to pick up the Tory and Reform fringes that think those parties are too woke.
    • There has been some movement in the work on the playground but it appears to be to remove the bags of materials that had been placed near the works.
    • You're sounding a bit Reform there aren't you @malumbu Because this time four years ago he, and his party, were calling on voters to do the polar opposite. Actually, I would probably be quite fun on Question Time - you know those sanguine pragmatists who treat all politicians the same and aren't blinded by their own ideology and actually insist on proper answers - one of those pesky floating voters who actually nearly always determine the outcome of elections. @CPR Dave you pointedly show how far-left parties always kill themselves from within - because the rag-tag collection of various fringe groups always leads to one thing - infighting. We all know it won't end well for the Greens.
    • Mal. Yours is a very idealistic portrait of Margaret Thatcher. That’s not the case and I standby what I’ve written.
