Very nice solid mahogany, understated washstand, great quality marble top. Collect from West Dulwich.

£399 ONO

WIDTH 920mm DEPTH 530mm

Highly usable antique Edwardian washstand / vanity cabinet, dating to the early 20th century (circa 1900–1910). Sourced from antiques fair for my parents a few years ago, selling along with other items due to their move to a retirement flat.

Constructed in solid mahogany, the washstand features a traditional rectangular form with a shaped or raised back—often referred to as a “splashback” or gallery—originally designed to support toiletries, jars, and grooming items . Many examples from this period incorporate marble prized for their durability and suitability for water use, reflecting the transition from earlier basin cut-outs to flat, hygienic surfaces. This piece of marble is particularly handsome with consistent grey veining across the entire surface and only a few imperfections/knocks.

Large fully accessible cupboard below provides internal storage. Decorative details such as panelled doors, brass handles, tapering legs typical Edwardian features. Overall form is well-proportioned and elegant.

Condition is consistent with age and use. There are surface marks, wear to the door mouldings and general age-related imperfections to the wood. These signs of wear are entirely in keeping with an authentic antique and contribute to its charm. Structurally sound overall, though it may benefit from sympathetic restoration or cosmetic attention.
