Peckhamgatecrasher
Just heard Theo Paphitis (a man of consummate taste) say on the radio, that he has a sneaking suspicion that Woolies will survive in some form or other. Ladygooner
I had my first saturday job in Woolies many moons ago - I have fond memories of working on the sweetie counter and getting sick eating chocolate covered brazil nuts all day! *Bob*
Woolies has been hopelessly out of date for over a decade now.It even looked out of date 20+ years ago when i was sweet-stealing teen. Out of date electricals in faded boxes, a wallful of irrelevant music CDs, aisles of kitchen tat.. Everything you can find everywhere else, only a poorer selection and slightly more expensive. It had to go. Huzzah!Actually, I can sort of see were he is coming from. I seem to remember Woolies being on the verge of bankruptcy about 20 years or more - and they just seemed to re-vamp themselves etc.,That was back in the days when they sold seemingly EVERYTHING. I seem to remember reading that they did an audit and found something like 4 miles of green sewing cotton. cdonline
I used to work there in the 80s. Hated the place and rarely ever go in, pretty much like everyone else it seems. It was decline then, gradually thinning its what it sells, until it resembled every other Pound Shop in the street. It just felt like they didn't really care or any enthusiasm for what they did. The only thing I liked is looking through the cheap dvds to pick up bargins like Xanadu for a couple of pounds.
