Recycling Textiles

Recommended Posts

You have to go to Lewisham for textile recycling in our part of the borough. I think I last raised this with councillors in 2016 or 2017, and the advice was to use the mobile recycling truck (10am-1pm so no use for anyone working outisde ED and even that service has gone now). I use the Wood Vale.

You should be able to drop these off at any charity shop. Just ask them if they take clothes for ragging. If they do, they?d probably appreciate it if you labelled the bag as rags, it saves them time sorting stuff out. They get paid per kilo. There?s also a clothing bin outside North Dulwich station.

Be aware that most places won?t accept duvets or pillows for textile recycling.

The Sainsbury's Saver Centre at Bell Green still has a big recycling bank. Or you can take them to the Southwark tip (if you have a ULEZ compliant car of course). We usually take a couple of bags of fabrics and shoes for recycling in our bi-annual tip runs.

St John?s hospice shop on Lordship Lane take them, I usually just drop them off and let them no it?s recycling so they don?t waste time going through the bag to check. It?s really easy if you live nearby and no risk that you turn up and it?s full (which can be a problem with the bins).

I have passed there and seen people rummaging through a load of clothes which they have pulled out of the bins and strewn over the pavement.

    • Is Sadiq worried about voter apathy/protest votes? Just got another flyer through the door, it seems to be one every couple of weeks, suggesting the Tories are closer than any opinion poll suggests and that people should not vote for the Lib Dems or Greens.
    • I'm basing it on 20+ years cycling in London and seeing the absolute biggest rule-breakers being my fellow cyclists. I once stopped at a zebra crossing to let a man cross and a cyclist behind me called me a putain for stopping.  I've even witnessed a grown man aggressively ringing his bell and swearing at a four year old child for not getting out of his way.... on a footpath.... in Burgess Park.  I genuinely cannot remember the last time a cyclist stopped for me at a pedestrian crossing.  They give the rest of us cyclists and bad name and turn the traffic against us.
    • Sorry to hear and glad you and hopefully bike OK and doesn't put you off cycling. Please do inform the police even if that sounds a waste of time.  Do consider going to the Motor Insurance Bureau, the slush fund set up by insurers for untraced/uninsured motorists.
