Possible doorstep scam

Recommended Posts

A man knocked on the door around midday claiming to be working on a tree behind our house with noisy machinery - all a bit garbled. He said that if anything dropped in our back garden he would clear it up and could he come in through the house to look/show me. That was the only clear statement he made. I said no need to come in as we wouldn't worry about any noise and closed the door to his obvious disappointment. He looked like a man engaged in building work, stalky, white, 40-ish, London accent. There has been no noise yet and there are no trees near our garden which could possibly need this sort of work. We have warned our elderly neighbour not to be taken unawares.

Don't actually have to be licenced to fell trees, the licence(qualification)is for working within the tree (climbing/ropes/etc) whilst using a chainsaw. Nevertheless, Loz is absolutely correct, ring 101 in any event so as Police are aware.

    • We were hoping to have a meal at Monkatsu  last night (Sunday), after having been out all day. Online information gave the closing time as 10pm. We got there around 8.30pm and they wouldn't give us a table because "the kitchen closes in half an hour." Surely it doesn't take half an hour to make a meal? We've never had to wait that long when we've eaten there before. Has anybody else had this happen? We ended up going home and getting a delivery, which wasn't how we had envisaged the end of a nice day 🙄
    • That place did only have pizzas on the menu, to the best of my recollection. We ate there once, the pizzas were ok but the room was not exactly atmospheric. Il Mirto has  a lot of pasta dishes on the menu,  but that also never seems busy. It's small and out of the way,  and easily forgotten if you're looking for somewhere to eat, I suppose.
