sociable cycle ride 10am Saturday July 14th

Recommended Posts

this ride starts and finishes in Deal Porter Square, next to Canada Water Library and opposite CW Station, SE16 7AR. It sets off at 10am and returns at 12 noon. Canada Water is on the Overground and it has a cycle friendly lift. There's no lift (and lots of stairs) at Peckham Rye but East Dulwich is easy-access and the Overground uses the same platforms at Peckham Rye.

The Mayor has announced funding for a new cycle route from Rotherhithe to Peckham and riders will look at existing routes and at places where new developments offer opportunities to improve routes or provide additional quality cycle path. The plan is to go from Canada Water to Peckham, back all the way to the Thames by a different route, and then return to Canada Water.

On the way we will look at the site proposed in the Canada Water Masterplan for a new pedestrian/cycle route from Canada Water to Lower Rd and then through Southwark Park to Drummond Rd. The group will considerthe old Peak Frean Biscuit Factory where a new walking and cycle route is planned through railway arches to Blue Anchor Lane.

The outward leg will finish the outward leg at Peckham Rye Station where it will be convenient to look at the route of the proposed Peckham Coal Line from Rye Lane to Queens Rd. Then down Asylum Rd, and across to the paths through Bridgehouse Meadows and on to Surrey Quays. The ride will follow the NR425 route past Greenland Dock, through Russia Woodland to the Thames at Durands Wharf which is the original location proposed for the Rotherhithe-Canary Wharf Bridge.

The ride will end with a return through the Russia Woodland to Canada Water with a look at the proposed alignment of the ?Greenway? through the old Printworks site. This is an easy-paced, two-hour flat ride of 9 miles with plenty off-road. Everyone is welcome. The route with comments is here:

these Saturday rides are run by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists which is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. You don't need to join anything or pay anything or anything at all to come with us.
